Gnosall Herons start their home League campaign in style

Amy Glover21 Oct 2018 - 19:57

Gnosall first home game saw them win 33-3 against Ashbourne this week.

Herons hosted Ashbourne 2's this weekend in their first home game at Gloverfields of the season.

With fantastic weather there was a superb crowd turned out to watch the game.

It was clear from the off that Ashbourne were there for the spoils with a strong team, whilst Gnosall were rallied from their last game's win against Wednesbury and the new Coaching team made up of Graham 'Ox' Coffey and Tony 'Milky' Way.

It was Gnosall that put the first points on the board with a fantastic penalty kick from Captain Jack Leah, swiftly followed by Ashbourne losing a potential try in the dead ball line. Two further penalties from Leah and a disallowed (forward pass) try for Ashbourne saw some great solid rugby being played by both sides.

Ashbourne got some points on the board before the half time whistle with a penalty kick and the first half ended 9-3 to Gnosall and all to play for.

In the second half Gnosall started with another penalty kicked by the boot of Leah which was followed by two great try's for Gnosall.

Ted Dinning showed brilliant spacial awareness to steal the ball away and power over the line for Gnosall's first try of the game, converted by Leah; which he followed up to make a brace merely 5 minutes later with a further great converted try.

There followed 15 minutes of hard physical rugby from both sides before Fraser Scott went over the line for Gnosall making the score 33-3 to finish the scoring for the game.

Man of Match went to Ted Dinning and a special mention for Stand-in 9 Luke Matthews for his Danny-care esqe takes from the back of the rucks.. All Gnosall forwards had a fantastic game, out-scrumming the Ashbourne pack; and the Heron backs showed brilliant defence to a charging Ashbourne back line.

Next week Gnosall are at home again against Stoke Development team who sit above Gnosall mid-table in the Staffordshire League Division 1 KO 3pm.
