Improved Second Half Not Enough Against Quality Old Brods Side

A cold and breezy afternoon at Westfield Banks saw Goole entertaining in form Brodleians, in this twice postponed fixture. The final outcome resulting the visitors going top of Yorkshire One, which on their performance looks justifiable, as they were certainly in my eyes the best team to visit Goole this season.
From the KO Brods took control of both territory and possession, resulting in a converted try after 11 mins. Goole were unable to get out of their half and withstanding some heavy pressure from their opponents. From the re-start Goole did at last get some go forward ball but whatever they did the Brod's defensive line was on hand to stop them, regain possession and keep them pinned in their own half.
Frustration finally showed, when a fracas at a breakdown on 25 mins resulted in a yellow card for the opposition wing and a red card for Goole’s captain Moore, Goole playing the next 55 mins with 14 players on the pitch. As statistics will demonstrate any team down to 14 men should concede at least 7 points during their absence. So it came as no surprise, when on the 30th min Brods again got on the score sheet with 7 more. Goole’s defence then held out until the break, to take a well-earned breather and try to figure out a way back into the game.
HALF TIME GOOLE 0 BRODLEIANS 14
Rob Shand came on for Sam Thurlow to take a well-earned rest and the team took up the challenge of forcing themselves back into the game. For the first 20 mins of the half Goole impressed by gaining more ground and possession but equally Brods always seemed to be on hand to defend their ground, a prominent feature of their game. Eventually Goole had to concede another Brod's score, as they again struck deep into Goole territory, increasing their lead to 19 points to nil.
To Goole’s credit, at last they got control of the ball and field position putting consistent pressure on the visitor’s defence, which began to show some cracks, resulting in Goole pressing deep into the Brods 22. The pressure told, when centre Matty Lill broke into the visitors 22 and produced a deft grubber kick for full back Holt to follow up for a touchdown. The ref then lost patience with Brod's infringements, yellow carding 2 players within a minute of each other. Unfortunately for Goole the stats didn’t work in their favour, as they had for Brods and the visitors closed the game out with more vigorous defence and control of the ball.
Summing up, Goole took to the field with a depleted squad but nevertheless put on a hard-fought display by all concerned. In particular forwards Jack Smith and James Chantry were at the forefront of everything, both in defence and attack. The pack, under pressure at times, dealt admirably with most set piece situations. The performance itself was gutsy and full of spirit and character, with all watching knowing we are watching a side whose commitment can’t be questioned and are capable of producing the goods against anyone. They just need a bit of luck both on the field and with injuries.
So, now to next week, and another home fixture. This time against a Keighley outfit currently below Goole in the table: Goole having beaten them in the away game early in the season. I’m sure hopes are high, whilst nothing is being taken for granted.
