Last Kick Penalty Secure Final Match Win at Brid

So, to the final game of what has turned out to be a truly memorable season. A difficult trip to promotion chasing Bridlington, who only needed one point to secure a place in next seasons Northern League competition. Goole on the other hand with nothing to aim for, other than the satisfaction of ending with another win to go with their amazing tally for 2022.
As it turned out both teams got what they wished for, in what turned out to be a 10 try, pulsating, sometimes unbelievable, contest between two committed squads. Bridlington ending with 2 points, achieving 5 tries and a losing bonus point. Goole finishing with 5 points from a win with 5 tries.
How the game began certainly didn’t have any signs of Goole achieving anything other than a losing end to a long season.
Goole facing a strong wind and receiving the kick-off found themselves defending deep in their own half. A knock-on by Bridlington and a Goole scrum, ball won with the scrum going backwards. Townend peeling off in typical fashion, but the ball lost in contact and the next thing you knew Bridlington had opened up play using their speed out wide and Goole had conceded a converted try within 3 minutes. 2 minutes later the home side produced an innocuous looking grubber kick behind Goole's back line, which nobody seemed to react to and while they dithered, Bridlington didn’t. Result try No 2 on 5 minutes. 13 minutes and another case of Goole caught napping, ending with another try for the home side. The kick added and Bridlington cruising at 19-0. Goole's large following watching were dumb struck in what looked like a return to their pre-Christmas performances, where they just couldn’t win anything. They looked flat, and as though they couldn’t wait for this long season to end.
But then, suddenly, Goole switched into a higher gear and all their supporters saw the Goole they have become accustomed to seeing. Strong play across the park, an assault on the home try line, with Centre Matt Lill touching down for Goole's first score after 18minutes. Two minutes later and this time Jack Smith surged through the midfield, taking out players left, right and centre. Excellent back-up support and the ever-aware Chantry touching down for try 2. The score now 19-10 in favour of Bridlington.
Sixteen minutes of fairly even play followed until on the 36th minute, and using the strong wind to their advantage, the home side again began to dominate territory with strong forward pressure forcing Goole back into their own 22. Eventually succumbing to the Bridlington onslaught, providing them with their much needed try bonus point. Promotion guaranteed and with the pressure off the half seemed to slow to a full stop with Bridlington in the lead 26-10.
The question now, could the strong wind now behind Goole get them back into the game, and would they manage to make up the points deficit?
The 41st minute, with the wind certainly helping their cause and hey presto, prop James Walton forced his way over for an unconverted try from a close-range line out, bringing Goole closer at 26-15. Goole now looking more and more dangerous as the game went on. Unfortunately, on the 50th minute a head clash between two Bridlington players resulted in the game coming to a stand still with one player laid unconscious in the middle of the pitch. Fortunately, after about 15 minutes of stoppage time the player had recovered enough to be able to walk off the pitch, with everyone hoping he would make a full recovery.
The game restarted and suddenly Goole looked flat and lacking energy, during which time the home side's full back came into the line on halfway and managed to run in untouched to score by the posts, to add 7 points to their tally, taking them further in front 31-15. Some watching convinced that was the end of Goole. The full back appeared in what looked like scoring positions twice more but each time, what looked a certain score ended with errors and the danger gone . What then transpired was an all-out assault on the Bridlington try line. Firstly, back row Coates going over, followed soon after by Ounsley who secured a Bridlington towering kick out of their 22 into Goole's half. Taking it on the full he went on a mazy run from wing to under the posts for a sensational score to narrow the gap to 31-29, with both tries being well converted by Moore.
Could they do it everyone asked? How long was their left? Nobody knew due to the lengthy injury stoppage. From more and more forward pressure Goole were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. The electric scoreboard showed 31-27. All Goole's supporters arguing amongst themselves. Some that the kick wouldn’t win the game, the others (who could count) that the scoreboard was wrong and the score should be 31-29. Moore converted, the official blew for full-time... and then the scoreboard suddenly put up the final score 31-32 in favour of Goole. The correct result.
To sum all the above up. It was truly a game of two halves. First half showing all that went wrong before Xmas. The second showing all that has gone right since. A team finishing strongly, with the Bridlington President praising Goole's 1st team squad.
Thanks to everyone involved on the playing side for a truly entertaining season. Along with the odd moments of doubt until they finally got into their stride. There will certainly be a few conversations going on in other clubs, about how Goole finished the 2nd half of the season
Title contenders next season? Who knows? Personally, I can’t wait.
