Why Join Govan?

If you're reading this article then it could be for numerous reasons, the obvious one is that you are already a member of the club but this is meant more specifically for people who do not fall into that category. This article is meant for anyone that may have come across the site via a suggestion from a friend, an internet search for a good club in Manchester to come and play for or even those that have landed here after happening across some of our social media partners and supporters informing customers or followers about us.

Govan Athletic has spent the last seventeen years building a reputation as a club that is always looking to progress, to grow and to build an exceptional group of members that want to join us on the journey of making something special. A club that is driven to win but prides itself on developmental coaching and good conduct on the pitch (resulting in numerous promotions alongside Fair Play trophies in multiple leagues). At this point in time, at the start of the preparation for a season in which the club again tries to raise its bar and make further progress in great league that ethos is as important as ever. And to do that we are doubling our efforts to bring in fresh players.

The club has always been open to new people coming down and getting involved, and with the possibility of three teams across a wide ranging spectrum of ability there is no reason at all why Govan shouldn't be the club of choice for any keen footballers looking for a new home. Being based out of the Platt Lane Complex and the Manchester University playing fields in Wythenshawe we can offer great playing surfaces and facilities for anyone across South Manchester that is looking to get the most out of their love of the game.

It's natural that when looking for a new club people would find it difficult deciding which team might best suit their needs but there are some compelling reasons why any player that has a good attitude towards their game should be taking a serious look at Govan as their best fit. When you play for Govan Athletic there are certain things that the club feels are expectations that they should be meeting in their provision to you. These provisions are not universal at amateur level, and it would not be going too far to claim that the club has forged a reputation in this area, and is respected widely for its efforts.

You can expect:

  • The Manager will ensure that the team is fully equipped for the game (kit/balls/nets/flags/1st aid/water-bottles/etc)
  • The Manager will ensure you’re ready for the game with a clear, well planned team-talk & a thorough warm-up.
  • You will improve as a player if your attitude allows.
  • The Manager will make every effort to give players (who have earned it) as much game time as possible.
  • A squad of players who are supportive and who look to play an attractive brand of football as per our philosophy.
  • A record of all your appearances, goals, assists & clean sheets will be kept; with awards given for reaching set landmarks.
  • Well organised, planned and professional quality sessions lead by numerous FA Level 2 qualified coaches.
  • All the necessary equipment provided for a quality session.
  • Injury-prevention warm-ups & developmental drills & coaching
  • A Manager that keeps you informed & up-to-date with club events.
  • A well organised annual general meeting, with agenda, minutes taken & opportunity to have a say in how the club is run.
  • A well organised photo of all current club members taken by an experienced photographer & to be kept as a memento of the season.
  • A number of well-organised social events which allow you the opportunity to get to know other club members and develop great team spirit and lasting friendships.
  • A well organised end of season event with a Govan DVD of footage from the season, a programme, a 3 course meal, games and awards.
  • A club that emphasises the importance of being a positive force in the community through its local charity work.

If that sounds like the sort of offering that you think might be tempting then why not get in touch with us and get down to one of our sessions? We are an open and welcoming bunch and once people decide to take a chance and experience the standard of the training and the quality of the people that we have involved they usually tend to stick around. The sooner you come down and get involved the sooner you can get up to speed. We've had hugely important players even arrive mid-season before now, the important thing is to make the jump and come, test yourself out and get playing.

So, what are you waiting for? Whether it be calling one of our managers from the contact numbers on the site or hitting us with a message on here or on social media why not just give it a go and see what happens? It could be the best decision you make this week you know?

Get down. Get involved. You'll love it.
