After finishing the last season with a great comeback and six wins in a row Gravesend were looking to start this season strongly. From the first push back, they were strong on the attack but by midway through the first half, Gravesend’s defence were feeling the pressure. With some great deflections and interceptions by Player-of-the-Match Adele Downer, and some excellent defending by Vicki Kalaka and Sharon Griffin, Anchorians were denied a goal. A change of goalkeeper for Gravesend at 25 minutes, when Kirsty Marshall stepped back from midfield to cover for an unwell Sue Jones, failed to unnerve Gravesend and they held Anchorians to a 0-0 draw at halftime.
The second half started with Anchorians being awarded another short corner but couldn’t convert. With Gravesend back on the attack, Gravesend were rewarded with a hard-fought goal. Nina Bromley expertly took a side-line hit-in to Debbie Hamer in the middle of the pitch, who drove the ball confidently into the D and past their goalkeeper. Despite Anchorians’ efforts to the last whistle, they were kept goal less and Gravesend celebrated their first match of the season with a win.
