Snow and Ice at Stowmarket

Stowmarket 2nd XV – 19
Great Yarmouth - Broadland 1st XV 7
Great Yarmouth – Broadland travelled to Stowmarket last weekend, to a fixture which had been at risk of postponement, with temperatures hovering around zero, and a significant wind chill as well as regular periods of snow, somehow the pitch remained soft enough to play on.
Great Yarmouth had some very good early field position, but no matter what the Great Yarmouth side attempted, Stowmarket cleared, after a ten minute attacking phase, where Kieron Wilkes, Darren Gook and Jimmy Dwyer all came close to scoring, the visitors came away with no scores.
The snow was falling horizontally across the pitch in the strong wind and passes and kicks were unpredictable for both sides. George Wilson and Asa Morrison had some good runs, and Scrum Half Simon Ruddick was bringing the forward in tight to make ground, but to Stowmarket’s credit, the defence held firm. A great break down the side from Murray and Collings looked very promising, but a kick through was deflected, spun out to the side-line into the hands of the Stowmarket winger, who collected it to go through to score (converted)
The Second half began with pressure from Stowmarket, who manged to find some space out wide to score. Great Yarmouth responded quickly, and moved the ball rapidly down the field with some good runs from Barry Trett and Ant Payne. A ruck formed a meter short of the goal line, with Josh Evans and Kane Read, securing the ball, Shawn Howley took a short pass before putting Ben Colling through to Score (Converted Murray)
An injury to Simon Ruddick, saw Andrew Lovick Join the pack. The visitors had opportunities, George Wilson put in a great run from a loose ball in the lineout, and wings Tristian Barber and Dan Jones made some good ground. Stowmarket however countered well and two passes added a third try, with time short, Great Yarmouth worked hard to try and secure a losing bonus point, with time expired, Stowmarket kicked for touch to conclude the game, but Jimmy Dwyer manged to deflect the kick from the side line and regain possession. Great Yarmouth put in a valiant attempt at a final attack, moving within five meters of the goal line, but the game was concluded as Stowmarket managed to gain possession.
The 2nd XV Match v West Norfolk was postponed due to a frozen pitch
