Controversial confusing finish mars a great game of rugby.

Broadland Gt Yarmouth produced a strong attacking performance against 2nd place Lowestoft and Yarmouth on Saturday.

The first Broadland try was almost scored by winger A Gallant who dragged 3 Lowestoft players over the try line but was held up. From the resulting 5 metre scrum, C Hewitt picked and went before passing to scrum half B Collings who went over.

The Lowestoft backs were quick and a combination of Broadland handling errors and poor tackling allowed them some counter attack scores.
Prop M Greenwood showed his pace by getting over in the corner after the Broadland scrum secured possession good hands from backs, C Black and J Wells, gave the ball to S Murray who was able to put M Greenwood away to score.

Scrums and set pieces were fiercely contested throughout the game but front row of S Brown, G Wilson, and M Greenwood with powerful second row of C Calnon and K Wilkes game Broadland the edge and set the tone for a dominate pack performance.

First team Captain had to go off just before half time after a friendly fire incident resulting in a nasty cut above the eye, luckily it will not affect his looks. L Raven came to replace and his strong carrying and accurate line out throwing was evident throughout the rest of the game.

D Gook was given a well earned break at half time with L Fox making replacing him, picking up yard with excellent lines of running almost immediately.

During the second half powerful subs M Cammock, M Beckett and J Dwyer coming on to keep the pressure on the opposition pack. Wingers T Barber and J Murray were brought on to add fresh legs to the back line.

After Broadland won a penalty in midfield, S Murray kicked expertly into touch to give Broadland excellent field position. The resulting lineout was won by J Dudley after an excellent throw from L Raven, then the whole pack mauled Broadland over the line, with fly half S Murray emerging with the score.

Broadland we are able to build phases of possession with carries from K Wilkes, and J Gidney, the forwards decided to keep possession tight which led to substitute M Beckett scoring from close range with his first touch.

Full back A Payne counter attacked well all game gaining yards in dangerous areas of the pitch.

After M Greenwood’s try Broadland believed the score to be 29-27 in their favour. The resulting kick off was gathered by J Dudley and possession recycled until the clock ran down, then S Murray kicked the ball out, understanding Broadland had won.

Once the score was confirmed 34-31 to Lowestoft, Broadland can take great credit and belief from a very strong performance against 2nd placed team in the league. And if the intensity shown during this match is taken into the remaining 3 games Broadland will keep pace with the top teams in the league.
