Excellent performance in less than excellent conditions

Great Yarmouth – Broadland Rugby Club hosted Dereham at Cobholm on Saturday, the first times these sides had met this season. Familiar faces returned to the forwards and a reshuffle in the backs following an injury to Jamie Murray who will be missed due to his current try scoring form. Dereham travelled with a very strong squad – listing 21 players in their pre match line up and a new coach at the helm.

James Doggett got the game underway under similarly blustery conditions to the previous weekend and GYBRFC soon found themselves camped in the Dereham half. The big forward 8 who have dominated almost every game with their scrum this season impressed again, giving Liam Haylett an opportunity to score from the base, which he expertly took. James Doggett continued to utilise the cross field breeze to keep Dereham pinned deep in their own territory. Clean ball and a smart offload from Chris Calnon allowed Darren Gook to drive over for the next score. Relentless jackling from Liam Fox and Ben Collings continuously caused problems for Dereham at the breakdown. Jay Pollard was next to score, going over in the corner after another solid platform created by the scrum. Smart play from Marcus Lekerman in the midfield left a gap for Jacob Wells to pop through and sprint away to score under the posts, converted by James Doggett. Dereham were able to pull one back before half time, quick offloads allowed them to make a lot of ground up the park, and after GYBRFC failed to clear their lines, Dereham were able to pounce and score. 22-5 at half time.

The second half was a similar story to the first with GYBRFC equal to any threat posed by the visitors with both the scrum and lineout looking like dangerous weapons for the home side, in both attack and defence. George Wilson was next to go over in the corner after breaking off a maul. Liam Haylett finished off the scoring with a second, cutting a sharp line which carved through the defending line. Final Score 32-5.

Sami Jordan was awarded man of the match for tireless runs and solid defence out on the wing. Next week GYBRFC host Lakenham and Hewitt, a new addition to the league replacing a Norwich side who had been unable to fulfil fixtures, K.O. 14:00.
