One of the most significant projects that the Club has ever participated in was using football as a medium to draw attention to the lack of basic human facilities both for children and adults in Ethiopia. The theme of the project was ‘changing perspectives and making a difference’ this was achieved in conjunction with the HELM Corporation, representatives from the I.F.A. and a team of coaches from Greenisland.
Everyone involved secured corporate sponsorship for the project and the monies raised was used to supply chairs, desks etc for schools in deprived regions. The first visit to Ethiopia took place in 2004 from which ‘The Irish Rovers’ charity was formed; this charity along with the support of the Greenisland Club continued to work for three years in Ethiopia.
