On the rise

Welling Town Fc V Greenwich Borough Fc Match Report Tuesday 27th August 2019.
SCEFl PREMIER LEAGUER FIXTURE 2019

This evening’s fixture was an opponent the management knew too well from the SCEFL division one, the all-conquering champions Welling Town. After our first point on the board against the early top of the table pacesetters Corinthians, we looked at this fixture with plenty of optimism knowing that our display last week should revitalise certain individual’s confidence and belief.
The weather over the weekend had been perfect for the bank holiday partygoers but not so for many amateur football clubs across the country who were still involved in the preliminary rounds of the Fa cup.
Tuesday evening was a lovely night for football and the two clubs didn’t let us down there was decent support from both sides plus the game was going out live on youtube thanks to Kevin Oakley and his Welling Town backroom team (much appreciated Kevin)
We made a couple of tactical changes Antuan west dropping to the bench, Johnny Miller starting his first game for the borough, we also kept the impressive centre back duo of Sam Fitzgerald and Jason Mensah(1) together after a superb display against Corinthians.

There is a simple saying in football “Goals Win Games”

The game kicked off with welling town pressing from the start with the lively right-winger testing left-back billy muckle after 3 minutes getting a dangerous cross into the box!! This we thought was clearly going to be a battle of wits for Billy and the back 4. After 5 mins we had a corner which Sam Fitzgerald should have at least made the keeper make a save.

We then attack again this time Brian Zepo with a one on one he tries to lob the keeper but the ball goes agonisingly wide. The ever-impressive Fred Obasa then has 2 chances in succession and both go begging. We start to dominate the midfield with Alex Nelson and the revitalised Shaq Richards playing in tandem and setting the tempo of the game, after 22 minutes we get a well-deserved goal great work down the right by Veejay Miller who feeds the ball to Kemo’s feet his hold up play brings Johnny miller in to curl a left-foot shot into the top corner 1-0 to the borough well deserved well worked goal…………………………….c’mon boys more goals please.

We really seemed up for this game as its all us Brian Zepo with another chance to make it 2-0 again missing the target!!!!! Fred Obasa then decides that he is going to take welling town to the task at every opportunity again missing some gilt-edge chances that would have killed of welling Town aspirations half time
Welling town 0- 1 Greenwich Borough Fc

The game really should have been dead and buried in the first half and we carried on in the same vein in the second half pinning welling town down for long periods in their half, the gaffer makes the first change of the night the ever-impressive Alex Nelson off for Jason Mensah (2) and Brian Zepo of for Antuan West.
We keep pressing and another chance this time falls to Kemo after great work by muckle again the chance goes begging, then Johnny miller with a goal at his mercy blast over I asked myself “do we want to score more than 1 goal tonight”
The game was starting to become predictable as welling get a gift of a chance to equalise but somehow they succumb to miss from close range still 1-0. Antuan West is terrorising the Welling Town defenders and puts the ball in the box on numerous occasions but somehow we can’t finish Fred Obasa again great work crosses for Jojo with a header who seems to mistime his run and missed by a whisker. I have actually lost count now of the chances missed.

However, in the back of my mind, I knew welling town only needed one chance and football can be a cruel sport sometimes when you don’t take the chances that are presented to you!!!!! Welling Town gets a fortuitous corner in the 80th minute and yes they score 1-1 game on with welling Town now in the ascendency. The game is now like basketball match with both teams going for the win we get one more gilt-edged chance Fred Obasa doing all the hard work but still struggling to find the target, that however was the last chance of the night and the games frantic pace slows could there be any more chances not for us and in the end and the points are shared.
Our next game will be away to Banstead in the Fa Vase I hope our offensive players watch the high lights of this game and bring their thoughts and reaction to Banstead Saturday.
