Greetland grit outshines Newsome nuisance.

A lovely sunny day up in the clouds saw a confident Allrounders side take on a Newsome Panthers side that had breezed past them earlier in the season. The Panthers were in for a shock today though, as a determined Greetland put in to practice all they’d learned in training to take a shock lead following a tremendous run down the wing from Noah.

Greetland were determined to show their opponents how much they’d improved over recent months and were well led by a stand out performance from Will – putting some strong tackles in as ever and showing strength and speed going forward. He was joined in his efforts by Louis, who again showed everyone how much he’s progressed under the watchful eye of Coach Seal. Again and again he drove the ball forward and gained valuable yards for his team.

This dogged attitude allowed Greetland’s flair players to stand out. Joe and Lil were combining well providing opportunities for Ellis to whip down the wing and for Wilf to barge his way through his opponents. Indeed, it was Lil who was leading the way, dancing through a bemused defence time and again and proving tricky to stop. She skillfully picked up a neat grubber from Joe and was unlucky to fall just short of the line.

Newsome were well organised too though, and were able to score several break away tries on the back of Greetland’s attack; picking up the loose ball on several occasions and capitalising on Greetland’s broken line. Sam and Issy were moving well with the ball though and gaining valuable yards on a pitch more suited to the home side.

Four months ago it was looking like it might be a struggle to have enough players to get through the season. What came out of this game was a real belief that, against the odds, each and every player was determined to stand up and fight for each other. Maddie was flying in to tackles, Noah was barking instructions and encouraging his teammates, Karl was eager to get on the ball when the odds were against him, Joseph was driving the ball forward and proving and inspiration. Jacob was keen to get on the ball and superbly strong when defending.

Today, Greetland had 13 determined young rugby players playing hard for each other and feeling proud to wear a Greetland shirt.
