Grimsby U17s played host to touring side New Brighton from Merseyside in their first game of the season. The match was played in good spirits and in typical touring fashion with Grimsby playing the welcoming hosts.

The Blues got off to a flying start, scoring in the opening minutes. From the kick off Grimsby put New Brighton under pressure and forced a scrum deep in their opponents 22. From the scrum No.8 Ash Rendall-Tyrrell picked the ball up and powered over to score. Shortly after second row Huw Cowper spotted a gap and raced through to score an individual try. Centre Lewis Rothenburg added the conversion. Fellow centre Bradley Treacher also got on the score sheet with a run from the Grimsby half, side stepping his opponents to score in the corner. Grimsby began to control the rucks resulting in two quick scores from flanker Sam Fleming and hooker Conor Simcock. Another individual try from Cowper and conversion from Treacher gave Grimsby a comfortable 34-0 lead at half time. New Brighton started the second half strongly and from a penalty for a high tackle scored their first points of the match. A mistake by Grimsby allowed a try shortly after. This rattled Grimsby and they stepped up a gear passing the ball around allowing scrum half Ryan Gant to score, with Rothenburg adding the conversion. Grimsby introduced the fresh legs of Kieran Austin Thomas at flanker who added two more tries to give the Blues a convincing 53-8 win.
After the match both teams enjoyed the hospitality of GRUFC. The Blues kept up the club tradition of winning the boat race.
