West Bridgford were a couple of players short so up stepped Grimsby U18s in Mike Vankampen, Richard Watson, Tom Hudson & Robbie Gray to help out. The game was evenly matched for the first 15 minutes with both teams launching probing attacks and both defending well. However Grimsby opened the scoring following a strong drive from prop Luke Munro, who swivelled to lay off an excellent pass to the pursuing No.8 Ash Rendall-Tyrrell who spotted a gap and dived over to score. Centre Bradley Treacher added the conversion. Flanker Huw Cowper was a constant threat and following one of his trade mark runs shaking off several attempted tackles the Blues scored again. Cowper made good ground taking the ball into a maul. The ball was quickly passed out to second row Callum Russell who sent a neat pass to Rendall-Tyrell. Winger Evan Picking went wide in to space screaming for the ball. Rendall-Tyrrell obliged unselfishly and laid the ball out to Picking to score in the corner. West Bridgford continued to cause Grimsby problems and some excellent defending tackles by fly half Lewis Dyson and full back Rob Bell prevented any score.
In the second half Grimsby continued to press forward and it wasn’t long before they scored again when flanker Sam Fleming peeled off a maul to score. The try of the match came from more Grimsby pressure and a quick pass from scrum half Ryan Gant to Dyson who sent a dummy pass to trick his opponent. With a neat sidestep Dyson broke through the gap to score. With ten minutes to go and following a serious injury to a West Bridgford player both teams concurred with the ref and the match was concluded with a 22-0 win for Grimsby.
