Grimsby U17s entertained Bakewell U17s in a top of the table clash at Springfield Road. Grimsby in top spot played a strong second placed Bakewell team in a highly entertaining match.

Both teams were evenly matched with the Blues front row of Lloyd Roberts, Conor Simcock and Richard Watson just getting the edge over their counterparts. The back row partnership of flankers Sam Fleming and Huw Cowper were a constant threat and it was Fleming who set Cowper up for the opening score. Following a quickly taken tap penalty by scrum half Brad Treacher, Fleming received the ball wide and sent Cowper through to score. Bakewell responded quickly and scored an equalising try virtually from the restart. Bakewell were beginning to cause problems and excellent tackling from centres Lewis Rothenburg, Levon White and winger Evan Picking prevented them gaining ground. Grimsby continued to counter attack and from a Treacher penalty for not releasing the Blues went in front again. Bakewell took the lead back again with a smash ball try from another penalty before Fleming capitalised on a loose ball and put Grimsby in front 13-10 at half time.
In the second half the lead continued to change hands with Bakewell scoring a converted try early on. Grimsby responded immediately and following a good drive from the Grimsby pack regained the lead. Bakewell went back in front soon after following a kick deep into the Grimsby 22. A fortuitous bounce put full back Rob Bell under pressure and a failed clearance allowed Bakewell to score and give the visitors a six point lead. Grimsby continued to press and for the last quarter of the game Bakewell were hanging on desperately until the final minute of the match. Grimsby worked the ball well through the phases and gained good ground with some powerful rucking and driving. This allowed Cowper to dive over and score. With Grimsby one point behind in the dying seconds, a difficult conversion from the touch line was coolly slotted between the posts by Treacher, to give Grimsby a well-deserved 25-24 victory and maintain their 100% record for the season.
