The blues opened the scoring on 10 minutes when full back Rob Bell went over following a good supporting run. Good work by Grimsby’s back row of flankers Huw Cowper, Sam Fleming and No.8 Ash Rendall-Tyrrell made deep inroads into the Ilkeston half resulting in a try for centre Brad Treacher. Following a series of rucks Cowper added another try smashing his way through the Ilkeston back line. Treacher added the conversion to give Grimsby a 17-0 half time lead.
In the second half Grimsby continued to press and a neat kick over the top of the Ilkeston backs by fly half Lewis Dyson led to another try. The ball dropped over the try line and centre Lewis Rothenburg won the race to reach the ball to touch down. Treacher added the conversion. Soon after Cowper scored his second try after receiving an excellent pass from Fleming. Rothenburg added the conversion before scoring his second try with a breakaway run. Grimsby punished an Ilkeston mistake when a loose pass was intercepted by winger Evan Picking who fed the ball wide to Dyson. Dyson sprinted half the length of the pitch before being tackled, but managed to scramble to his feet and run on to score to give Grimsby a 41-0 victory.
