Bakewell started brightly and had Grimsby pegged in their own half for the first quarter of the game and were first to score. Grimsby responded well taking the game to Bakewell. Grimsby heaped on the pressure and nearly scored but the ball was held up. With the scrum being taken back to the 5 metre line, No.8 Ash Rendall-Tyrrell picked the ball up and laid the ball off to scrum half Ryan Gant who looped round the back and touched down in the corner to level the score. Almost immediately Bakewell took the lead again when a long range kick isolated winger Jordan Landymore. With Bakewell first to the ensuing ruck the ball was snatched and their winger sprinted free to score under the posts allowing an easy conversion. The blues fired up, responded again with another attempt being held up. With the ball again being taken back for a 5 meter scrum, Gant picked up the ball and jinxed is way through to score his second try in the corner. Gant then scored his hat-trick with some quick thinking. Grimsby continued to press and following a number of drives Bakewell ended up defending a ruck in their own try area. After Bakewell presented the ball Gant had the simple job of stepping over the ruck to touch down to give Grimsby a 15-12 lead at half time.
For the majority of the second half Grimsby had the upper hand but just couldn’t increase their lead but went close again after fly half Lewis Dyson kicked the ball over the Bakewell backs and chased after it to touch down but was judged to have lost control. Bakewell snatched the lead with a breakaway try with only minutes left on the clock. The conversion giving them a 19-15 win. Grimsby still remain top of the table and now only need to beat Boston in their final game to win the NLD Plate group.
