In gorgeous sunshine, Grimsby second string turned on a performance to match the sparkling weather. It was also the first chance that 3 brothers have had to play senior rugby for the club since their development in the ranks of Grimsby Youth set up.
Brothers Ashley (22), Nathan (19) and young star Bradley made it a Watson backline as Grimsby marched to victory over a well-disciplined Sleaford side. Grimsby made the early running with strong forward play from Pettiford and Dave Waudby making the hard yards carrying the ball into the Sleaford forward.
It wasn’t long before young prop, Scott Brown exploited a chink in the Sleaford armour and penetrated through the line and a quick turn of pace saw him run over the line and bring about the opening try.
An excellent line out throw from Pettiford hit the mark of the rising Piggott who fed Ash Watson, who fed his young fly-half brother Brad, who with help from Nathan Watson and Phil Dann who both ran the planned dummy lines, he threw a pass to the full back McDonald who exploded onto the ball, only for desperate Sleaford defence to force the knock on from Tidswell when only inches from the line.
The experience of Zak Bradley brought much needed calmness to the back line, and offered the wise head to help the development and decision making of Bradley Watson, who guile and panache was picking holes in the Sleaford defensive set up. The second try came from an excellent scrum by the Grimsby pack, winning the ball against the put in, Adam Waterman turned the ball to the back, where Waudby powered into the 22, before offloading to Dan Waterman to put over in the corner. The boot of Ash Watson converted a near impossible kick out wide.
In the second half the dominance was completed with two extra tries from Zak Bradley and the excellent Adam Waterman, who’s blitz defence and attacking flair was a constant thorn in the side of the Sleaford side.
