Grimsby second XV travelled to local rivals Lincoln to record their first Merit League victory of the season.

With a strong side at their disposal and signs of form from their recent friendlies, Grimsby were on the front foot from the off.

Fly-half, Brad Watson (17) was in splendid form and was able to demonstrate why the club are so positive about the future with a first half display which showed confidence and free running which excited the crowd watching. The mixture of youth and experience has been well blended and now the stuttering league campaign is back on track with fast go forward rugby the order of the day.

Young Watson delivered a floated pass, behind centre partnership Briggs and Dann, who attracted the attention of the Lincoln line and allowed the space for gallivanting full- back Jim McDonald to burst through the lines and off load to John Mansfield to scream onto the ball and Grimsby were in full flight threatening the Lincoln try line. Unfortunately this wasn’t to end in the deserved 5 points due to Lincoln putting in a sterling effort in defence, yet it pointed the way for Grimsby, who had to hold and give, but do it at the right time. The one way to beat them was get round the back, as Lincoln couldn’t hit them or hurt them.

The first try came with good work from prop Vinny Thornton who offloaded to Vickers, to create the overlap for McDonald to score in the corner. The combinations of the forwards were working to help set up ideal spaces for the quick back line to exploit. The elder Watson brother, Ash at scrum half directed the forwards well and with excellent communication and a sharp eye, Fly half Brad was able to blast through a gap in the line of Lincoln and put in Mansfield to score.

It wouldn’t be the first time that young John Mansfield would get his name on the score sheet, his bulk and wheels combination he simply acted like a juggernaught and bulldozed his way through half opened gaps in the Lincoln armoury.

Fullback McDonald scored his second try of the game with excellent play from Chris Burke, whos strong running and fast hands put in McDonald who against the odds was able to reach the line with an outstretched arm.

Human wrecking ball, Marc Burke was applying his usual sting to the chest of opponents with his ferocious hand offs, and was able to reach the line where others would have failed. The final try of a scintillating first half display of attacking rugby was secured from the line out, pocket rocket Adam Waterman stole yet more ball and his inside pop to Jake Vickers playing his first game at hooker, drew in three Lincoln forwards before off loading superbly to Chris Burke who rounded the full back and scored Grimsby’s 5th try.

With a host of changes made throughout the second half, Grimsby weren’t able to reach the dizzy heights of the sensational 1st half display. However strong runs from centres Dann and Briggs meant that Lincoln weren’t let off the hook, It was this hard work that brought about Mansfields second try, as the centres combined and popped in the winger who dummied beautifully that even the people watching from the side lines were taken in by it, Mansfield hit the accelerator and sprinted for the line.

Grimsby’s first half display had laid the foundations for this victory and man of the match Adam Waterman was the catalyst for this free scoring game as he was simply every where a thorn in the side of Lincoln in attack and defence.
