Grimsby 2’s V Barton 19/02/12

Grimsby 2’s entertained Barton at home in a typically abrasive encounter.  Keen to get back to winning ways the Blues were quick to apply sustained pressure on the visitors from the off.  The result of which was an early yet unsuccessful attempt at 3 points.  The missed kick was a blessing in disguise as it left Grimsby camped in Barton’s 22.  The forwards fronted up at the set piece driving the red and white’s scrum back off of their own ball.  When it spilt out into the loose scrum half Nath Watson was there to pounce and chalk up the home side’s first points on the board.  2 points were added by fullback Ryan Carr, his first of 2 conversions that day.
As the game developed and the derby swung into full flow the home side gave away a couple of cheap penalties.  The opposition were unable to take advantage of these and were outpaced to the breakdown by Adam and Ashley Waterman.  The frustration of which shone through evening up the penalty count.
Playing their way back up field the Grimsby pack finally let the backs stretch their legs and put ball through hand.  A couple of slick moves later saw the centre combination of Tom Baker and Dane Briggs combine to send the Blues over the line and into a 12 point lead at the break.
The second half had a messy start with many handbags on display.  After the dust had settled and both teams refocused on the game at hand the Blue’s bench was called into action.  Big hits from Matthews and determined counter rucking led by Jeff Lewsam and Jedward contributed to keep Barton at bay.  To their credit the away side kept on coming creating several opportunities.  The best of which saw the Barton skipper drive his way over the line only to be held up and unable to ground the ball.
As the game approached its conclusion there was time for one last score.  Tom Fowler replaced Stu Dillon at 10.  Fresh legs and balance of running saw the stand-off zip through the defence turning them on their toes.  Capitalising on this the Home side set up several phases of play which climaxed in Big Vinny Thornton smashing his way through the opposing bodies and swallow diving over the line a-la Ashton giving Grimsby’s second string the 19-0 victory.
