The first half was close with the Grimsby pack dominant. Hullensians opened the score on 23 minutes. Stand in fly half Phil Dann had the chance to put points on the board for the Blues with a penalty for not releasing, but the kick just missed the posts. Grimsby piled on the pressure and following a series of rucks in the Hull 22, scrum half Evan Picking passed the ball out to No.8 Ian Macdonald who managed to force his way through to score. Dann missed the conversion to leave the score 7-5 to Hull at half time. Hull stretched their lead with two further tries after the break. Despite this Grimsby continued to play some good rugby. From a Hull line out Richard Kissane managed to steal the ball and sprinted through but as he went to touch down a last minute tackle caused him to drop the ball. The Grimsby forwards were becoming a constant threat with prop Hamish Auld, hooker Conor Simcock, second row Jeff Lewsam and flanker James Turgoose all making ground with pick and go drives, all going close to scoring. Macdonald added his second try when he received another pass from Picking and he again smashed his way through the Hull backs. Hull scored two more tries which were both fortunate the first came from a scrappy bit of play were a loose ball was kicked and deflected of another player. The ball bounced over the line for a Hull player to win the race to the ball. The second was scored in the corner but looked like a foot was in touch and could have benefited from a video replay. The final score 29-10 to Hullensians did not reflect how good a performance this was from the Blues.
