A combined Grimsby U17 & U18 side entertained local rivals Market Rasen U17 & U18s in a friendly at Springfield Road.

Rasen were under strength and borrowed Grimsby players Callum Rogers, Kyle Sykes and Rory Rendall-Tyrrell. Grimsby opened the scoring in the third minute when Rasen conceded a penalty for coming in at the side of a ruck. From the penalty, fly half Lewis Dyson put the ball in the corner. From the resulting line out No. 8 Gareth Roberts received the ball and dived over to score. A good powerful run by flanker Huw Cowper led to a second try with a pass to scrum half Robbie Gray. Centre Kieran Thomas added the third scoring in the corner. The Grimsby forwards were too strong for Rasen and had the upper hand in the rucks and mauls. From a ruck the ball was passed out to prop Richard Watson who smashed his way through to score. Full back Lewis Rothenburg added the conversion and then went on to score an individual try himself. Rasen on one of their forages into the Grimsby half, kicked the ball into the Grimsby twenty two. The ball was caught by Rothenburg and with a couple of powerful hand offs sprinted the full length of the pitch to score. Centre Brad Treacher converted. Gray scored his second try when he picked up the ball from a ruck and peeled off and touched down. Rothenburg converted to give the Blues a 36-0 half time lead. Shortly after half time Thomas scored his second try breaking through a gap and touching down under the posts. Dyson added the conversion. Rasen putting in a great amount of effort weren’t deterred by the score and managed to score their only try of the game before Rothenburg scored his second try in the corner with a superb running line. Flanker Huw Cowper was a constant threat and got his name on the score sheet with a powerful drive. Replacement fly half Brad Watson added the conversion. Hooker Conor Simcock scored Grimsby’s tenth try when he broke free and sprinted for the posts leaving Watson with an easy conversion to give the Blues a comfortable 62-5 victory.
