Grimsby Town youth team can go top of the EFL North East Youth Alliance table with a win against Oldham Athletic at Cheapside on Saturday (12pm).

The young Mariners, who beat Huddersfield Town 5-1 last time out, are currently second-place on 40 points – one behind league leaders Doncaster Rovers.

And Neil Woods’ side could return to the top of the table this weekend if they beat Oldham and Doncaster fail to win at home to bottom-of-the-league Huddersfield Town.

Town go into the game in high spirits, following the 5-1 away victory over the Terriers two weeks ago.

And they also had four youth team players – Mattie Pollock, Jock Curran, Rumarn Burrell, and Brandon McPherson – involved in the first-team squad in the 1-0 League Two win over Carlisle United on Monday, with Pollock coming on as a late substitute.

Oldham are out of form going into the game, and are winless in three – picking up just one victory in their previous five matches.

The Latics lost their last two games at home to title contenders Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City, 2-0 and 1-0, respectively.

And they will be hoping to prevent the young Mariners from lifting the EFL North East Youth Alliance trophy by causing a potentially costly upset on Saturday.

Town drew 1-1 away at Oldham back in November, and the young Mariners will be hoping to claim all three points against the Latics this time around.

Elsewhere in the title race, it’s top v bottom as Doncaster Rovers host Huddersfield Town, and third-place Bradford City are at home to seventh-place Lincoln City.

After this weekend’s clash with the Latics, Town welcome local rivals Lincoln City to Cheapside for the final game of the season on Saturday, May 4 (11am).
