Bad light abandons play, bringing an early end to a closely contested match.

On the last Friday in July, Guildford CC U13s travelled away to Sutton for their last SJIL game of the season.

Traffic meant that only 8 of Guildford’s players had arrived as the toss was made at 5.20pm.

Fortunately Guildford, captained by Max Towers, won the toss and elected to bat on an overcast evening where there was risk of rain and bad light.

The 25 over match started promptly with Jacob Audley and Milo Roe - a familiar opening batting pair.

Sutton had a number of U12 County Age Group players in their side - hence despite being in the bottom half of the league, they were going to prove tough opponents.

It was a big start from Guildford with several early fours from Milo Roe, which really set the tone.

Sutton had one quick bowling down the hill, plus a varied attack with plenty of spin to follow.

The fast bowler was a bit wayward, making life difficult for the keeper, who had a day to forget despite his moaning and relentless comments from behind the stumps.

34 runs off first 3 overs, 41 runs after 4 overs.

Milo Roe was first to fall - caught and bowled for an impressive 37 runs (off just 33 balls, including 6 fours).

Not long after a good off spin delivery bowled Jacob Audley for 11 runs (including 1 six).

James Mundy and Niko Dahl came in at three and four respectively.

Niko Dahl bludgeoned 3 fours in a row, off short pitched spin deliveries taking the score up to 93 for 2 off 12 overs. Then 2 big leg side sixes from Niko Dahl off more short bowling. 112 for 2 off 14 overs.

The opening quick was brought back on, to unsettle the batting and did so to good effect.
Niko Dahl skied a shot to covers in the next over from round the wicket. 37 runs off just 24 balls (including 6 fours, and 2 sixes).

James Mundy then picked up the gauntlet and having batted himself in, started to let loose, with Freddy Scott-Gall in at number five.

157 for 3 off 20 overs.

Freddy Scott-Gall was unlucky to be run out, with the side trying to up the score with wickets in hand.

Then man of the match James Mundy retired on 50 not out (off just 45 balls, including 7 fours, and 1 six). It was an impressive innings from a player in top form with the bat in recent games.

Max Towers smashed a nice 9 not out (off just 4 balls, including 2 fours). Kieran Finnegan hit a six off his first ball before being bowled late on, and Cameron Sim repeated his recent run plus a ball late on, with 8 not out.

215 for 5 was a huge score off 25 overs.

Sutton had taken around 1 hour 50 minutes to bowl their overs, despite plenty of spinners in the attack, and their manager was eager to mention that light might become a problem. They had been keen to play 25 overs, which appeared a stretch given the time taken.

Milo Roe opened the bowling with Kieran Finnegan down the hill. Kieran Finnegan showed real pace early on, with a fast bouncer from his first ball. In his second over a quick one nipped back to the left hander off a cutting up pitch and Alec Stewart’s nephew was very unfortunate to get winded and retire hurt.

Sutton went out hard, and were slogging boundaries early on.

Guildford mixed up the bowling with Freddy Scott-Gall, Cameron Sim and Jacob Audley brought into the attack.

The game was very much in the balance, with the home side’s number two and three batsmen both retiring on unbeaten half centuries.

What had appeared a huge target was now potentially in threat, and the pick of the bowlers on the day - Max Dyer and Kieran Finnegan - used their pace and bounce to bring down the run rate.

Max Towers secured the only wicket off this innings with a direct hit run out, off a wide ball from Kieran Finnegan.

James Mundy bowled a couple of handy overs before Sutton’s manager suggested calling the players off due to bad light.

Guildford’s 20 overs had been bowled in around 1 hour 10 minutes, despite only 2 overs of spin.

Guildford’s players were frustrated as the middle order did not have the power of the retirees and they felt in control, however Sutton seemed pleased having been tracking the Duckworth-Lewis target, and thinking an early finish gave them victory. 161 for 1 off 20 overs.

Ultimately the game was abandoned due to bad light, with Sutton seemingly keen to speak to the league - with an eye on victory, in somewhat unsavoury circumstances. If they choose to do so, they will discover that Guildford could have claimed a win due to a higher run rate, as per the league rules. Duckworth-Lewis does not apply.

Ultimately the safety of the players was more important than gamesmanship.

It was a shame that the league season ended in that way, however Guildford can move on, with their heads held high, having only lost against the top 4 sides in Surrey’s Premier league.
