Gwalchmai 0-3 Mold Alex

A great day for playing football it was and the pitch was in excellent condition as we welcomed higher league opposition to Maes Meurig for the Welsh Cup. Despite missing local tallysman Mark Griffiths and midfielder Gethin Davies we still entered the tie high on confidence following our 4-0 drubbing of Llandyrnog the week before.

The game got off to an electrifying pace in the unexpected October sunshine. The opposition were very direct and menacing, playing like a well run machine from the off. We on the other hand took a while to settle into the game. Following a few tasty challenges from Gerallt Jones we found our confidence and composure and soon settled into the tie.

We played some good football with Allman and Kieran getting plenty of the ball out wide to Bennett and Darren. Bennett had our best chance of the half as he beat three men down the right before drilling his shot just wide of the far post.

The visitors showed their ruthlessness midway through the half following a stray ball from our right, they immediately capitalised and played a direct ball over our defence. Unfortunately Gafyn Jones miss judged the bounce and failed to guide his header back to Wally as the menacing little striker nipped in to slot past the keeper, 0-1.

The second for the visitors came in the second half as we lost possession too easily the visitors attacked in droves, working into the box down our left the ball was cut back for the attacker to prod of home close range, a half hearted appeal for offside was turned down and the goal stood, 0-2.

Throughout the tie we played some good football and refused to be out muscled, however the visitors ability to work in unison and rotate into position meant that we were constantly exhausting ourselves. We created chances but not many clear cut with our best chance of the game falling to Gerallt Jones who failed to header home from close range following great play by Kieran Lewis down the left whilst we were two goals down.

Moments later substitute Gareth Roberts came close following a knock down from Alun Roberts only to miss judge the flight of the ball. Various half chances from distance by Allman and Corey went high and wide as we failed to find a foot hold.

In our dispersion we pushed on leaving ourselves exposed, a breakaway from the visitors sealed our fate as we exited the Welsh Cup. FT 0-3.

We can be proud of our performance today, at times we played some good stuff, our energy levels were high and we never let the visitors settle. Having said that, poor goals conceded and a lack of support to Corey up top may have cost us this one.

A word from the Mold Alex website:
Rogers happy to secure second round place

"Credit to Gwalchmai who put up a huge fight on Saturday. It was a very tough physical challenge and they really tried to rough us up but I think you could see the maturity in the side and the way it has developed this last year as we dealt with it very professionally. It's a very difficult mental challenge to go away from home against fired up lowed league opposition especially when it's such a long trip and there were traffic problems on route also.
That's three wins and a draw in our last four games which is obviously very pleasing.
We've had 7 away games in 9 fixtures and many have been mini bus/coach trips which I think when you consider that means the players deserve huge credit for their start to the season.
We shut the game down when we needed to and controlled things from start to finish.
We have two enormous games this week so all our focus at the final whistle was on ensuring we recover in time for Tuesday nights fixture at Denbigh.
