Gwalchmai 0-4 Barmouth

Saturday saw us host Barmouth at Maes Meurig in what we targeted as a match where we could find some consistency and put together back to back wins for the first time this season following our mid week win at Llanfairpwll.

The first half begun with a high tempo with the ball zipping around on the wet surface. Surprisingly both sides resisted silly attempts of sliding tackles on the encouraging surface.

The majority of the half was pretty even, however it was Gwalchmai that created the better chances. The visitors were pretty one dimensional and looked for their danger man Paul Lewis on every occasion which became predictable with Alun Roberts mopping up at every opportunity.

On 25 minutes the deadlock should have been opened as Allman cut in from the left to play in Chris Bennett who strode in on goal only for a rare bad touch to let him down. Five minutes later it was another chance for Bennett following some good play between Geth Davies and Kelvin Frazer, Chris homed in on goal once more only for the visitors keeper to make a smart save and force the corner.

The remainder of the half turned scrappy with both sides now forcing passes and long balls. The visitors were playing 3-5-2 and we were playing 4-4-2, this was hemming them back and our full backs were getting plenty of the ball, however we changed formation in the latter stages of the half to 4-3-3 which allowed the visitors more opportunity to attack down the flanks.

Neither side created anymore clear cut chances with both being frustrated and forced to shoot from deep. HT 0-0

At half time the coaching staff were far from pleased with the first half display, but little did they know what was to come from their players, or more so what wasn't to come.

The second half started and within 100 seconds of the kick off Barmouth worked the ball in from their left before the unmarked and unchallenged Rob Muffet shot from distance which beat the outstretched Gerallt Jones (deputising in goal following Ryan's last minute withdrawal) into the top corner, 0-1 after 47 minutes.

We were rocked by this as our intention was to strike early and push the visitors back. However we were dealt with a double blow as 3 minutes later a 'useless' punt downfield by the Bamrouth Keeper was miss judged by our centre halves for Muffet to once more home in on goal and make it 0-2 after 50 minutes.

It would be fair to say that we were stunned and for the next 5 minutes were all over the shop. However we soon found our stride and began to attack with Jon Williams effective down the left running from deep and Chris Bennett attacking down the right. We forced the visitors to play the counter attack as we searched for a foot hold. Paul Bryant had a header cleared off the line on 60 mins, Geth Davies forced a save from a header on 65, Kelvin then went close on 70 only to be challenged by the keeper. Crosses went unattacked, shots went wayward and Alun looked certain to have won a penalty on 75 as he was man handled in the box, no go!

Our frustrations were worsened as we desperately looked for a goal. However on 85 minutes it was man of the match Muffet who crossed a short corner only for confusion in our penalty area to result in Ieuan Brooks being allowed to header home from 2 yards, 0-3.

As if things couldn't get any worse, it did!!! In the 90th minute a helpless ball which looked to be running out was chased and kept in by Muffet who was in acres of space, being allowed to square to Paul Lewis to add to our humiliation and seal a 0-4 victory for Barmouth.

In the first half we created chances and should have been ahead at the break in what was a pretty even encounter. However in the second half we were nothing more than awful with the visitors capitalising on our stupid mistakes. We now have to learn fast in order to avoid this happening again and in order to put together a rich run of form before we enter the cup competitions. We need to cut out our comedy of errors and we need to take our chances.

Next up, title contenders and island rivals Glantraeth away on the 31/08/2015 at 18:15.
