Llanrwst United 2-1 Gwalchmai Small squad & fixture pile up taking its toll

With only 11 fit to play we arrived at sunny Llanrwst looking to put an end to our poor run of form.

We lined up with Kenny in goal; Jon, Andy, Cae Garw & JT across the back; Gerry, Allman & Craig in the middle; Ryan & Scruff were out wide with Corey playing as a lone striker; Steve Sinclair was on the bench but was far from match fit.

The first half got under way and was an end to end affair with both sides desperate for first blood. Gwalchmai came close early on, on two occasions as Craig Evans missed headed chances. At the other end the referee bizzarely awarded a free kick against Cae Garw after making an excellent last ditch tackle. From the resulting free kick the homes side struck the wood work and has a series of ineffective corners.

Then it was Gwalchmai's turn again, a route one ball foiled the defence allowing Corey to capitalize only to miss judge the bounce of the ball and let a one on one chance go begging.

Before the break the home side attacked and the #6 burst into the box, he was clearly brought down however the referee waved play on, clearly bottling the decision, not that we complained.

HT 0-0

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. However after 60 minutes the ball misjudged by Allman in the sun bounced in front of the centre halves who also failed to clear on two occasions allowing the menacing #9 to slot home with ease, 1-0.

We immediately looked to set the record straight and make it all square, however our final ball and inability to penetrate the roosters back line let us down. Then finally both Craig and Scruff helped the ball on in the box for Corey to turn smartly and slot clinically into the bottom corner, 1-1.

Now we looked to capitalize on our equalizer and use the momentum to push on for a winner. We came close on a couple of occasion but didn't put our chances into the back of the net. At the other end Jon defended with great composure to foil an attack, then Cae Garw made a last ditch tackle on the edge of the box. However a corner found us at sixes and sevens as the home side had a man over at the far post, the header was met to easily and both Kenny & Jon on the line failed to clear, 2-1.

Cae Garw went off with 5 minutes to play, on came injured Steve up front to add some physical presence however it wasn't our day and another loss came our way.

We have improved in the last couple of games, however we're far from playing at the top of our game. A small squad and a fixture backlog has seen us play 14 games in a month. Injuries and other commitments have seen us turn up to fixtures with 11/12/13 available and not always fully fit and allowing us little room to adjust things during the 90 minutes.

However, today we had a chance to win and will be disappointed having not come out of the fixture with something. We have 3 games remaining and must look to win at least 2 in order to preserve a respectable league position.
