Making his way through the Hall Green United junior set up, it came as no surprise when John forced his way into the Senior Club at the age of 15. He made his first team debut on 2nd March 1991 when he came on as a substitute in a 5-3 defeat at Bradford side Campion FC. His first goal came at home to Huddersfield ICI again after coming on as a substitute. He had to wait until 2nd May 1992 before he made the starting line-up, at the age of 16, losing 1-4 away to Brook Motors. That same season he made the Challenge Cup Final side in a 1-0 loss to Wakefield FC, and the following season was a scorer in the League Cup Final loss to Campion FC, but the start of his success came the following year as United beat Streethouse 3-2 in the Open Cup Final for his first senior winners medal at the age of 17. Much more success was to come at County and District level.
Along the 25 year journey, John has played in every position at some time and has also captained and managed the side at different periods. He reached 500 first team appearances on 28th February 2009 when United went down 3-4 at home to Campion FC.
Following on from this landmark, John continued to serve United and at this present time his First Team Record is:
733 Appearances and 333 Goals
Taking into consideration along the way he suffered a serious leg injury and a lengthy FA Suspension of 13 weeks along with a playing spell at AFC Emley, when they played at Belle Vue, it is quite a remarkable achievement and shows club commitment.
