Hall Road Rangers (Reserves) v Howden 1-1 – Haworth Park – 10-09-2016 Matchday Sponsor - Tony Hardy and Hall Road Rangers Vets FC Two days after their fast n furious FA Youth cup game Rangers added just two overage players to the squad. Over age being 19 &21 if you can count that as over age. Again the young team start reasonably well but go behind on 6 minutes after a defensive error gives Luke Cotton it all to do in goal but after the initial save the rebound is despatched for the first goal of the game .0-1. The management team have again marvelled at the resolve of this youthful team, playing the game from the back under pressure but with confident to do so. A couple of chances from Jacob Todd come close but never really test the Howden keeper. With Howden been a tight unit through the middle the best way to attack would be with width and Rangers were rewarded when they do just that, Brad Needham was felled for a penalty on 22 minutes. Jack Love stepped up but a comfortable height for the keeper allows the save with Mobarak Dahnug having the rebound hit the upright. Half time comes 0-1. The team talk at half time is stern but fair and changes are made with Archie Brown coming on for Dahnug. “They aren`t winning the ball you`re giving them it, there is a big difference” is heard from the Rangers changing room door. The second half seems to continue in this same vein. Within a minute loose play again sees the visitors effort cleared off the line. There isn`t any real rythmn to the game but in little spells the home side try to get hold of the game but Howden have other ideas. Pressure throughout the pitch gets the Rangers camped in their own half for long periods with another goal line clearance. Injury forces changes. Skipper Brad Hotte off for debutant Tom Cracknell and shortly afterwards Callum Battums off for Callum Keenan. Keenan within 5 minutes s of coming on could have levelled but the keeper making a decent save. With 15 minutes to go Rangers seem to find their second wind and openings begin to appear. Brown and Todd having chances but again the keeper isn`t really tested. Again going into the final 10 mins, something new this season for the team, enthusiasm keeps them going and on 85 minutes Brown attacks the defence and strikes low into the Howden net for 1-1. he final 5 minutes and the Rangers tails are up. A series of cynical fouls in the final third give them chances of the winner and when Needham has a chance from 25 yds the effort fails to hit the target. On reflection Thursday night’s mammoth FA Youth cup tie may have been the main factor as legs did look heavy for a few. Two debutants and three unavailable may have contributed but overall another step on the ladder and compliments from opposition and new visitors to Haworth Park on the way this young team try to play. As always a massive thank you to all whom sponsor the squad on its journey and especially today’s sponsor Tony Hardy from Hall Road Rangers Veterans FC . Fatherly figures looking after the kids!!
