Beth Smith gets "Highly Commended" in Player Recruitment category of RFU 2015 President's Awards

Alan Rogers2 Jun 2015 - 20:01

Having been shortlisted for an award at Twickenham, Beth Smith attended a celebratory lunch at Twickenham on 31st May

Having taken part in our o2 Touch programme, Beth saw that there were a handful of other women doing touch who were keen to try the 15-a side version of the game. Some informal coaching followed on a Monday night and, when she was happy that the participants would 'stick to it', she printed some flyers and started to advertise for more players. As players and potential players arrived, she also arranged to set up and advertise a "Pitch Up & Play" session with local RFU staff. This was a success and built up numbers even further.
All the time this was going on Beth was also fund raising and approaching potential sponsors. By the time there were 18 ladies training, Beth had acquired shorts, socks and shirts via sponsors and purchased balls; all at no cost to the club.

Beth then persuaded two of the 1st XV to take over the coaching and when they were happy that the ladies were ready for a match, one was arranged with a local team. Dozens of members, friends, family, sponsors and supporters watched this first match in a great atmosphere and, with Beth as Captain, they only lost in the last 10 minutes. The buzz around the club lasted for days. Word got round and over 20 ladies were soon training, some having never played before. Progress was such that they were victorious in only their 3rd ever game.

The club felt that Beth deserved some recognition for her efforts so she was put forward for this years President's Awards, a nomination that put her into the final six in her category.

Beth is pictured with RFU President Jonathan Dance and Past President Bob Reeves having been Highly Commended.
