Match Report

Hardwick started the 2020/21 season off in a new division against St Ives at home. And what a start it was...
St Ives arrived with a young team, which for some of the older players in the Hardwick side was a slight concern. The youngsters started brightly and showed early on that they had many hours of FIFA 2020 under their belts with the sleeky skills they were showing on the ball. Hardwick though unfazed by these nice skills and footwork did what they did best and that was to break down the play and get the wide men flying down the flanks. Ben Johnston early on providing some great balls into the box for the front two. Which brings me onto the front two, who would have thought that finally in Hardwick shirts we would see childhood friends Dom and Alex playing up front together, such a romantic story, hopefully one that will flourish as the season draws on... ahhh
Anyways, after some promising long balls by Hardwick, we finally looked like breaking the deadlock the runs of Atko, Dom and Ben Johnston in particular causing their defence problems. The first goal came after 25 minutes with the ball being threaded through to Dom in the penalty area who looked odds on to score until someone shot him and he went down like a sack of spuds. Up steps penalty maestro, and newly nicknamed ‘The Hardwick Messi’ Alex Burford. No point in making a big deal out of this, as Alex rarely misses a penalty and as usual slotted confidently to the keepers right. 1-0 to the wick!
The second goal didn’t follow too much later, at this point Hardwick were pressing and pressing and a second was looking likely. It came via the arm of Jo Parr, or Ed Breton , or Dom Wright or even Huw Liddell (actually the last one was nowhere near it) but many Hardwick players tried to claim it! Jo being new, a very good player and taller than most seemed to win the contest and was awarded the second off a corner from Alex onto his arm and in. Jo’s first league goal for the Yellows! 2-0
Half time came in time for a team talk taken straight out of the gaffa’s new Soccer book. The players and management not happy with the way we were playing football even though we were leading 2-0.
The second half started and straight away Hardwick started to put that right and play the style that has been shown pre season. We didn’t fully get going until around the 70th Minute and just after that with some lovely short passing football between Jo, Huw, Alex and Ben ripping the St Ives team to shreds and creating more space than the government guidelines during these strange times. This allowed Alex to pick up the ball on the edge of the area and on the bounce volley in the only way I can describe as a drop shot by Andy Murray over the keeper and into the far corner 3-0 to the wick !
Further chances were made with Huw Liddell slotting a ball through the defence to Alex Burford on a hat rick and only the keeper to beat, unfortunately his dink over the keeper was stopped as the keeper was, lets say, on the larger side, and was not getting down to anything quickly. Dean Harwood also had a chance to make it 4 after coming on in his role of striker.
Josh Sweet at the young age of 16 and making his Hardwick First Team league debut had a lovely chance to bag his first goal for the club but was stopped by a good save from the keeper.
Hardwick keeper Birdy was called into action with a great save in the dying moments to ensure he kept his clean sheet bonus as St Ives threw everything including their mums kitchen sink at goal.
The game ended with Hardwick FC running out 3-0 with the only clean sheet of Senior B on the weekend.
