The Rhino ladies took to Perth Road against Royston on a Sunday September afternoon for their first game of the season.
There were some nerves but huge excitement to get back to business after a long, very hot pre-season. The game began with a strong start from Royston who put in some huge early tackles to pop through Haringey’s defensive line and score the first try of the match.
A quick restart saw Haringey gain possession and some quick thinking from the backs opening up some space on the wing for rugby convert Holly Mee, playing at 15, to score the opening try for the Rhinos a mere 10 minutes into her first ever game. Buoyed by their success the forwards maintained an impressive defensive line from Royston before a quick rip from Samantha Shirley gave Haringey possession, popping the ball to eagle-eyed Number 9 Noemi Nemes who squeezed through a gap and over the line to take the lead. After an impressive number of phases characterised by big collisions in the middle of the field and supported by some excellent breaks by first timer Louise Waldock, Holly Mee was off again, taking a big hit she managed to stay in play (somehow!) and making the most of the overlap caused by the temporary disparity in numbers, and sprinting over the line to score again for the Rhinos.
Following a much-needed water break at half time the game got underway again with some immediate possession for the Rhinos. Fresh legs for Royston and some impressive line breaks took them over the line for try number two before the Rhinos returned the favour and Noemi Nemes put down her second directly under the posts.Louise Bonnett converted, thanks to the excellent sportsmanship of Royston who held the ball for her after chaos ensued trying to find a tee.
Another surge saw Royston make it to the Rhino line, the Rhino’s defence holding up their first attempt before they pressed over for a hard fought third. Time remained for both Noemi Nemes and Holly Mee to score again, both achieving an impressive hattrick in the first game of the season. Final score 32:19. Thanks to Royston for making the trek down from North Herts and for an excellent game, we look forward to coming to you next year. Looking forward to the social!!
