Training

Despite a cold and frosty start, the weather was fairly kind to us this week, and with 10 players available even though it is still half-term, we were able to work on our fitness and some attacking skills.

We started with the usual warm-up, although there was definitely some skiving going on amongst some of the players, especially when it came to getting muddy; funny, but I seem to remember being desperate to get muddy when I was their age! After the warm-up we moved onto a relay race to get the juices flowing, concentrating on picking the ball up from a strong position, changing direction quickly with ball in hand, scoring the try and keeping the pace going.

It has been a while since we have concentrated solely on passing and running along the back line, so we worked a few practices to get the players thinking about passing sympathetically and returning to a position from which they can receive the ball as quickly as possible. This theme was continued in a game situation, during which we constrained the teams to having to complete 5 passes before they could score a try, and then introduced a 3 pace run once the ball was received to prevent them from remaining static on receipt of the ball.

All-in-all, after 20 minutes of coached games, the players started to understand the need to run forward to gain ground and to put their own players on side, they also started to think about how they could support play when they don't have the ball. There is still a tendency to remain static on receiving the ball, or to run backwards away from the tackle, but we are getting there.

We are at home with Barnet visiting next week which will hopefully allow us to work further on our running, off-loading and positioning skills.

Player of the week was Max Eastman for his application of the principles being taught in the benefit of straight running and support play. He listened and demonstrated he understood the concept of drawing defenders and off loading into space. He also made improved decisions in his support play and understood the importance of alignment.
