The 25th Season in the History of Harrow Borough Football Club.

1957/58

Manager, Tom Loftus-Tottenham has predicted at the end of the previous season that only Briggs Sports had a better side than Harrow. Wise words, as we were runners up to Briggs and the only team to beat them in a league match during season. In fact Harrow completed the double over the league champions, 1-0 at home with Ken Aldridge scoring and 3-1 away courtesy of goals by R. Bloom, Fred Peake & Stan Robinson.
An unbeaten start to the season was ended in a 2-0 defeat at Hounslow in the F.A. Cup .In the Amateur Cup an impressive 5-2 home win over Edgware earned a visit to Lower Mead where Don Aldridge scored twice in a 5-2 defeat.
We were in the top four all season and at one point five points ahead (Vauxhall Motors & Briggs Sports had 2 games in hand) only losing two games right up until the very last week of the season when an unbelieve fixture pile up of TEN matches in the last 14 days of the season included two defeats to Vauxhall Motors , ending our challenge.
Part of the reason for the fixture congestion was a run to the quarter final of the London Senior Cup. The week after the F.A.Cup defeat a 4-1 win over Woolwich (K. Aldridge 3, D. Aldridge 1) started the London Senior Cup campaign. Ford Sports came to Earlsmead and held on to draw 2-2 after extra time but were beaten 3-1 in the replay at Dagenham. The then top Amateur side Leyton watched by a crowd of 600 at Earlsmead, a number of Leyton supporters were reported as arriving late as they could not find the ground, were knocked out by three goals to one, Phil West & the Aldridge brothers scoring one each. This set up a tie at Sandy Lane to play Tooting & Mitcham United , who would go on to win the Isthmian League title that season. Two supporters coaches were part of the large away following in an attendance of 2,600. Fred Peake put Harrow in the lead after 16 minutes, the visitors continued to have the better of the game but early in the second half Northern Ireland & Gt Britain International Paddy Hasty blasted a free kick past the unsighted George Wood in goal. This only spurred Harrow on more as a few minutes later great wing play by Micky Bottoms led to a chance for Phil West to flick the ball past Moore in the home goal to start great celebrations for those from north west London. The Quarter Final brought Finchley to Earlsmead. In an exciting contest that ended 2-2 after ninety minutes , Fred Peake & Micky Bottoms scoring for Harrow. Finchley struck first in extra time, but Ken Aldridge who was returning after missing a number of matches through injury equalised, only for Finchley’s centre forward Dixon to complete a hat-trick to win the tie 4-3.
In the hectic last fortnight of the season Edgware were beaten home & away in the North West Middlesex Invitation Cup.to set up a final with Wealdstone again over two legs, Ken Aldridge scored in a one-all draw at home in the first leg. At Lower Mead Kenny Gee scored for Harrow as the game ended in another 1-1 draw. So playing a 9th match in 12 days in days before substitutions were introduced an extra 30 minutes had to be played. Stones forward Hills scored first, Ken Aldridge replied for Town only for Hills to complete his hat-trick. There was not to be any silverware won , but a very good season it was. The club were transferred to Delphian League , thus taking a step up the ladder.
The Aldridge Brothers led the scoring charts, Ken with 32 & Don 29 whilst Phil West scored 26. Micky Bottoms was selected for the Spartan League X1, scoring against the Isthmian League side.
The reserves were also runners up in the Spartan League Reserve section.
Manager Loftus-Tottenham had a book published (see gallery)with a foreword written by Alec Stock.
