We continue our Club history series with the 28th Season 1960/61.

1960/61

The season started with a heavy defeat at Hertford , then a 4-2 home win the next week over Bishops Stortford followed by beating Edmonton 4-1 (Roberts, Thomas(2) & Scally scoring) in our third league match which would be our only league Fixtures until November. The Autumn would be all about Cup football as the Club reached the 4th qualifying round of the F.A.Cup.
We were given a tough draw in the 1st qualifying round , a trip to Lower Mead where our ex Players Ron King and the Aldridge Brothers lined up for Wealdstone but the hosts were beaten 2-1 (Willis, Scally). It didn’t get any easier in the next round as Hertford Town came to Earlsmead so soon after beating us 6-2 on the opening day. Thomas, Roberts, and Willis scored in an exciting 3-2 victory Staines were beaten 2-0 in the Amateur Cup before Bishops Stortford came to Harrow in the next round of the F.A. Cup. On an already boggy Earlsmead pitch the match was played in driving rain, Stortford went in front after only five minutes with Harrow replying immediately via a Dave Norman header. Stortford were still on top and regained the lead after nineteen minutes only for Harrow to draw level again in quick time as Dave Thomas netted. This time Harrow took control as Alf Willis and Thomas put the home side 4-2 ahead by half time. Nick Roberts added a fifth, then Stortford bombarded Wilson in the Harrow goal as he made a succession of fine saves before the visitors did score a third. Thomas completed his hat-trick & further goals from Willis and Norman along with a last minute consolation for the visitors brought the final score to 8-4!
Before the F.A.Cup 4th qualifying round match was a trip to the White Lion to play Edgware in the Amateur Cup before a crowd of over 1000.Derek Penny gave Harrow the lead but it was not to be as by the time Alf Willis scored “the most spectacular goal, a lightning left hook into the roof of the net” Edgware had scored four going on to win 5-2. An attendance of 788 gathered for our home F.A. Cup tie with Maidenhead United. Dave Norman and Nick Roberts had scored, the score was 2-1 in the 87th minute when the visitors had a shot on goal that Wilson had covered only for it to take a deflection off a defenders head, then end up in the back of the net on the opposite side of the goal to equalise. In the final minute Maidenhead attacked again scoring a winner to claim a first round match with Colchester United.
Our cup commitments resulted in a backlog of league fixtures, in the days before floodlights, this resulted in thirteen fixtures in April. We did the league double over runners up Brentwood as we finished sixth.
In March manager Bernie Reeves signed Derek Hoddle from Edgware (he had played against us in the Amateur Cup match) his young son, Glenn, would be a future star for Tottenham & England.
Dave Norman was ever present in the side and top scored on 24 goals , Alf Willis scored 23.
