Tributes have been paid to one of Hartlepool Cricket Club’s longest serving members.
John Rae, who ran the Junior Section during one of its most successful ever periods, died recently at the age of 91.
The popular figure was Junior Representative from 1972 to 1986. During this period, several talented youngsters came through the junior ranks and went on to play 1st team cricket for many years to come.
Players included Jerry Boyd, Andy Holland, Des Playfor, Nick Kennedy, Ian Jackson, Gary and Glen Tebbett, Ian Hendry, Andy Carter and Stuart Morley.
Alan Jackson, Chair of Hartlepool Cricket, said: “John Rae’s association with the cricket club goes back to when he was a young boy.
“Over the decades he has been involved in a number of key roles, and he was made an Honorary Life Vice President in recognition of his service to the club.
“In particular, he played a pivotal role in the development of young cricketers in the 70s and 80s.
“John was a true gentleman and a hugely popular figure at Park Drive. Our condolences go out to his lovely family, and we will all miss him immensely.”
John, who was born in Hartlepool, spent all of his working life in the motor trade, following his father into the family business.
In a career spanning almost 50 years, John also worked for Bradley’s in Blackhall and Peterlee, Mackinley Hyde in Hartlepool and Reg Vardy in Thornaby.
Jass Singh, who was the General Manager at Reg Vardy (Thornaby) when John retired in 1999, said: “We worked side by side for ten years, and throughout that time John was always the true professional and respected by everyone who knew him.
“Beyond his work, what always stood out most was how deeply proud he was of his family. His face would light up whenever he shared stories, and it was clear that his greatest joy in life was his family.
“He also carried such pride for his beloved hometown of Hartlepool. Whether it was supporting the local cricket or football team, that sense of belonging and pride was such a special part of who he was.”
John leaves his wife, Margaret, children Andrew, Alastair and Fiona, two granddaughters and one great granddaughter.
His funeral will take place at Stranton Grange Crematorium on Friday 13th March at 11am, and afterwards at Hartlepool Cricket Club .
