Whitehead joined the club in 2020 but due to the pandemic had to wait until August 2021 to make his competitive debut in a County Cup tie at Seaton Carew.

He scored two tries in that game as we ran out 14-64 winners at Hornby Park.

The number 8 would go on to score a further 5 tries in 17 appearances and was a key player in last seasons promotion campaign.

Hartlepool Coach, Andy Wray, said: "Since walking through the door Callum has been a positive influence on the squad. We not only benefitted from his performances on the field but also his experience and leadership. I can't speak highly enough of him.

"He did a great job for us and naturally we're disappointed to see him leave. But we can all respect him wanting to return to Rovers.

"He leaves with our best wishes and thanks for the contribution that he made to our success last season."
