The gridiron will replace the traditional rugby markings on the field during the Summer as Old Boys Buccaneers become the latest club to play out of Mayfield Park after the success of Hartlepool Hurricanes Rugby League.

The name is a nod to Hartlepool's maritime history and heritage.

They will become only the sixth British American Football Association franchise in the region following Northumberland Vikings, Gateshead Senators, Newcastle Blackhawks, DC Presidents and Darlington Steam.

The Buccaneers will join the Senators and Steam in BAFA NFC Division Two North alongside Scottish sides Clyde Vally Blackhawks, Dumfries Hunters and Dunfermline Kings.

The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a return to full operations has been signalled for June 2021.

Buccaneers Head Coach, Troy Doyle, said: "If you’re a fan of American Football, or just want to try something new, I encourage you to come and get a taste for the game with the Old Boys Buccaneers. Take the punt!

"We are setting our sights high and despite this being our rookie season and starting behind the eight ball, our aim is to go all the way to the BritBowl, baby!

"I'm confident that with all the sporting talent in the local area we can throw a hail mary and pull together a roster of players that is capable of clawing their way to victory, inch by inch."

Practice is on Monday evenings at Mayfield Park.

What is American football?

American football is a contact sport which is like a chess match with shoulder pads - the strategic element is just as important as the physical skills. The rules and regulations can sound complicated but are easily explained on the 'Rules of the Game' section of the BAFA website. However, the basic rules are:

- There are 11 players from each team on field and games are played in four 15 minute quarters.

- The purpose is to move the ball towards, and ultimately into, the opposition's end zone to score a touchdown.

- This is achieved by either running with the ball until tackled, or throwing the ball downfield to a teammate.
