This appointment marks a significant step forward in our commitment to inclusivity and safeguarding.
Dawn joins the newly forming Safeguarding Team, which is being established to better support the needs of our growing club. With increasing numbers across all age groups and formats, it has become clear that a single safeguarding officer can no longer meet the diverse and evolving needs of our rugby family.
As Neurodiversity Lead, Dawn will play a key role in supporting coaches, players and families, ensuring that our environment is welcoming and inclusive for everyone, including those with neurodiverse conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia and more.
She will be a dedicated point of contact for guidance, support and advocacy, helping to shape a culture where every individual can thrive.
Stewart Hind, Chair of Mini & Junior Rugby and current Safeguarding Officer, welcomed the appointment:
"As our club continues to grow, so too does our responsibility to ensure every player feels safe, supported and included. Appointing Dawn as Neurodiversity Lead is a vital step in recognising and addressing the needs of our neurodivergent members. I’m delighted to have someone with her knowledge, passion and lived experience joining the team."
Dawn brings with her a wealth of personal and professional experience in neurodiversity. Her work will align with wider national initiatives, including those supported by England Rugby and Neurodiverse Sport, who recently launched new inclusive coaching resources aimed at creating better experiences for neurodivergent players.
Dawn Bearby also shared her enthusiasm for the new role:
"I’m incredibly proud to be taking on this position at the club. Neurodiversity brings so much to our communities, and I’m here to help make sure that players, families and coaches feel confident, supported and celebrated. My goal is to work alongside our fantastic team to create an environment where everyone feels they belong - on and off the pitch."
Further appointments to the Safeguarding Team will be announced in due course.
This team will work together to ensure Hartlepool Rugby Club is not just a place to play rugby - but a place where everyone feels seen, supported and able to be their authentic self.
