3XV Edged Out in Entertaining Eight-Try Battle with Peterlee & Horden

Official HRFC5 Mar - 12:09

Hartlepool 3XV were narrowly beaten 24–28 by Peterlee & Horden 3XV at Mayfield Park on Saturday in an entertaining CANDY League 3 encounter that swung both ways and kept spectators engaged right to the final whistle.

The hosts made the perfect start. Following a powerful carry from Vunaini Cavuiliti that took Hartlepool deep into the visitors’ 22 and to within five metres of the line, captain for the day David Swinbourne was perfectly positioned to take the offload and crash over from close range. Anthony Martin added what was a straightforward conversion to give Pool an early 7–0 lead.

Peterlee & Horden responded well, attacking up the bank and eventually breaking through after several phases of pressure. Despite some determined defensive efforts from Hartlepool, the visitors found their way over to level the scores.

Hartlepool regained control before the break following sustained pressure inside the opposition 22. Second row Jordan Thornhill showed excellent awareness to take a quick tap penalty, stretching out to ground the ball to the left of the posts. Martin was again on target with the conversion to restore Pool’s advantage at 14–7.

The home side continued to threaten in the second half and grabbed their third try against the run of play. Fly-half Liam Lester sent a perfectly weighted 40-metre grubber kick upfield that forced the Peterlee & Horden full-back to scramble towards his own line. Hartlepool winger Daniel Hind, chasing at full pace, beat him to the ball and brilliantly grounded it just before it went dead.

However, momentum shifted dramatically. Over the next 15 minutes the visitors capitalised on broken play, using their pace to devastating effect as they ran in three converted tries without reply to turn the game around and move into a 28–19 lead heading into the final exchanges.

With Hartlepool under heavy pressure and Peterlee & Horden looking the more likely to score again, the hosts dug deep and mounted one final push. Hind sparked the comeback attempt by coming off his wing to kick cleverly over the defensive line. Although the visitors’ full-back gathered the ball, Hind immediately contested the breakdown and won a turnover penalty.

From the resulting attack, the ball was moved wide to Cavuiliti, who powered through several tackles before releasing Hind, who had looped back around to his wing. The 18-year-old finished superbly in the corner to reduce the deficit and set up a dramatic finish.

Hartlepool had one final opportunity from the restart. Cavuiliti, a constant menace throughout the afternoon, again burst through the defensive line inside the visitors’ half. Unfortunately, his offload was lost forward by Hind and the referee blew for full time moments later.

It was a highly entertaining contest, with both sides crossing the line four times. Despite the narrow defeat, Hartlepool can take plenty of positives from the performance, with several players producing some of their best rugby of the season.
