NOVOS BREAK POOL HEARTS WITH LATE BRACE

NOVOS BREAK POOL HEARTS WITH LATE BRACE

Stewart Hind2 Feb - 21:46

Despite an excellent performance, the defeat sees Pool three points behind Bishop Auckland in the second relegation spot.

Pool played down the bank first half and after five minutes took the lead with a well taken Lewis Wilson penalty from 25 metres .3-0.

Novos then showed their attacking prowess with a quickly taken penalty which saw the blind side attacked and the winger went over for the opening try of the afternoon. 3-5.

Pool pressed again and clearance kick saw the Pool fullback catch the kick and returned a superb 50-20 kick. Pool were 10 metres out but the well oiled Novos line out stole the ball and the danger was cleared.

24 minutes on the clock and Pool edged ahead with Lewis Wilson’s second penalty of the afternoon. 6-5.

The next five minutes saw the home team pressure the Northumbrians and Dave Chester was getting over the gain line every time he got the ball and with Josh Riley and Steve Smailes in support Pool punched a punched a hole in the Novo’s defence before a penalty was awarded for a high tackle . Pool chose the scrum and Oli Hamilton picked up at the ruck who then interchanged passes with Tom Stead and Liam Pape. Dave Chester looked likely to score but as he went to ground the ball a great double tackle saw him held up on the try line .
Just before the stroke of half time , Pool were on the offence and were camped in the Novos 22 metres line and lack of concentration saw the ball dropped and the speedy Novos backs took advantage running 70 metres to score under the posts.6-12.

The second half saw Pool immediately went on the offence with a great catch and run Liam Pape at the kick off. Anth Harvey linked up well and continued the momentum with a strong run, Oli Hamilton fed Joe Hall who broke the gain line and Dave Chester took the ball on before the visitors were penalised for being offsite at the ruck.

Pool elected for a scrum and as they pressed for the next score, great defence from Novos kept the home side at bay and strong tackling led to the ball being knocked forward. From the resultant scrum, Pool drove the Newcastle side back at a rate of knots and the next breakdown saw Anth Harvey dive over from the ruck for Pool's first try of the afternoon. Lewis Wilson added the conversion to put the Mayfield Park side in front for the first time.13-12

Pool kept the lead for five minutes before Novos expansive play saw a third try crafted which saw the the number 8 break away . 13-17.

With 8 minutes remaining , the home side retook the lead, Dave Chester strongly drove the ball forward and from the next ruck, Oli Hamilton passed the ball to the right and Tom Stead showed off his handling skills with quick hands to winger Tyler Hall who finished well in the corner.18-17. Lewis Wilson touchline conversion was just wide of the upright.

Pool need to finish off the game off with some clever game management however two minutes later , the away side attacked the blind side and Tyler Hall was unluckily yellow carded for a deliberate knock on and the momentum swung towards the visitors and a well worked attack saw the 4th try scored.18-24

To rub salt into the Pool wounds, 2nd placed Novo’s attacked again and Josh Riley was yellow carded for coming in from an off side position and a penalty try was awarded to the score a flattering 18-31 final score.
