Gateshead 38 – Hartlepool 17: Hosts punish errors in hard-fought contest
Hartlepool travelled to Hedley Lawson Park to take on Gateshead in the latest Northern Counties League fixture, but despite periods of strong pressure, costly errors proved decisive as the home side secured a bonus-point victory.
First Half
The hosts started the brighter and almost opened the scoring after just four minutes. Hartlepool were penalised for an early push in the scrum, and Gateshead took the free kick quickly. Quick hands in the backs created an overlap and exploited space out wide, but fortunately for Pool, the final pass was dropped.
Five minutes later, Hartlepool were penalised again for holding on, and Gateshead’s kicker made no mistake, slotting the penalty to give the home side a 3–0 lead.
Hartlepool responded immediately from the restart. A high tackle by Gateshead gave Ben Clarke the chance from 35 metres out, and he struck a superb penalty to level the scores at 3–3.
Gateshead soon regained the lead. In the 12th minute, their centre broke through the Pool defence to score the first try of the game under the posts, making it 10–3 after the conversion.
Hartlepool began to build momentum through their forwards, but disaster struck in the 15th minute. Josh Walker fielded a clearance kick and looked to launch a counter-attack, but his pass to Keagen Thomas was intercepted, allowing Gateshead to run in their second try. The conversion made it 17–3.
Despite the setback, Pool grew stronger in the scrum and twice drove Gateshead backwards at pace, earning two penalties in quick succession.
On 34 minutes, Hartlepool looked certain to score after several phases of attacking rugby, beginning with a powerful break from Max Filby. The forwards carried repeatedly, but Gateshead’s defence held firm and Pool were held up over the try line.
Three minutes later, Hartlepool were camped inside the Gateshead 22. Tom Stead, Danny Cooper and Jon Carney were all involved as the ball was worked wide, creating an overlap. The final pass to Thomas Wray, however, was thrown too high, and a golden try-scoring opportunity went begging.
The half ended 17–3 to Gateshead.
Second Half
Hartlepool came out with renewed intent. From a scrum near halfway, Ben Clarke made an intelligent break and linked with Max Filby. Filby passed to Keagen Thomas, who beat two defenders with a determined run. Quick recycling saw Josh Walker feed captain David Chester, who ran a superb line to crash over under the posts. Ben Clarke converted to make it 17–10.
Gateshead responded immediately. From the restart, they moved the ball through the hands, and their winger cut inside on a lovely line, beating two defenders and leaving the Hartlepool defence flat-footed. The try, converted, extended their lead to 24–10.
Hartlepool hit back. From a five-metre lineout, Jon Carney secured clean possession and the forwards drove through several phases before Max Filby powered over from short range. Clarke’s conversion reduced the deficit to 24–17.
Gateshead struck again when their centre broke through weak tackling to score their fourth try, which was converted to make it 31–17.
Hartlepool earned a penalty on halfway and kicked to the corner, setting up a lineout seven metres out. Danny Cooper made a strong break from the set-piece, and Ben Clarke exchanged passes with Jon Carney before Filby was stopped just short. A dominant scrum followed, but despite several phases and relentless pressure, Gateshead’s frantic defence kept Hartlepool out.
With ten minutes remaining, Gateshead sealed the win. After several phases in midfield, their scrum-half spotted a gap and broke through to score the fifth try, taking the score to 38–17.
