A great start to the season with goals from all over the team

Scorers: Finlay (2), Rafferty (2), Tom (2), Toby, Ben, Thomas

After a hectic few weeks sorting out kit, pitches and registrations, it was finally time to get the season started and what a start it was! Looking fantastic in their brand new kit (pics attached), the Harriers put in a stylish performance to match, with an emphatic win over newly promoted Fleet Town.

Despite an early period of pressure from our opponents, the new three man backline (Alistair and Ben joined by James F) was impenetrable and Sam had little to do in the first half apart from showing how well his kicking and throwing has come on over the summer. James N and Nathan were looking sharp on the left and right whilst Rafferty and Finlay were mixing it up in the centre behind Tom up front. With the whole squad present, Thomas, Toby and Charlie started on the bench.

The new bigger pitch really suits the boys swift, passing game and 10 minutes in, the Harriers counter-attacked, a great finish from Finlay giving us the lead. From that point the floodgates opened with Raff not wasting any time getting his debut goal for the Harriers with a brilliant left-footed strike from the edge of the area. The boys were taking no prisoners now and another five goals quickly followed with Tom and Toby getting on the score sheet and Ben scoring a spectacular 25 yarder. 7-0 at half time.

Fleet came out much stronger in the 2nd half and put the Harriers goal under pressure on a number of occasions with far fewer chances for the Harriers. Thomas was working really hard up front and eventually got his reward, a tactical switch from Paul pushed Tom up front alongside him and the 8th goal soon followed. A penalty before the end that the Fleet keeper was unlucky not to save finished off the scoring for day.

As well as playing fantastic, flowing football it was great to see goals coming from all over the team with six different scorers. If we play like this every week it will be a great season!

Man of the match this week (and our captain this season) was Ben Murphy – he’d obviously made a decision before kick-off that NO-ONE was getting him by him and his defence and combined this with some surging runs and a great goal.

Next week it’s Derby Day - a top of the table clash against the Hawks who also won 9-0 away – 11am kick off at Camelsdale Rec.

Come on you Haslemere!!
