Borough Downed by Ghosts
By Gary Brown
Fakenham Town 2-0 Haverhill Borough
New manager Kevin Parsons tasted defeat in his first match as Haverhill Borough boss, as his charges fell to a two goal defeat at Fakenham Town.
Shorn of a number of first team regulars, and with Colby Williams making his debut in midfield following his arrival from Lakenheath, Borough struggled to get a foothold in the first half after right back Harry Simmonds’ scorching shot from the edge of the penalty area was well saved by Tom Coombe in the first five minutes.
Both centre-back Cameron Watson and goalkeeper Lewis Down were called upon to deny early Fakenham attacks, although Down could do little to stop Ryan Curtis’s shot which flew past him into the top corner of the goal after 21 minutes.
Craig Pruden shot over on the half hour, but Borough had few further attacks prior to the break.
The visitors started more brightly in the second half, and with Simmonds and Zak Ollington given rein to overlap down the right they finally started to put pressure on the Fakenham defence. With Williams growing into the game alongside the hard working Ryan Swallow, Borough begain to dominate with Pruden having a shot tipped over the bar, and further opportunities wasted.
However Fakenham struck again following a Borough corner. A well worked break saw Josh Youngs and Harry Exley combine to set up Tom Blake for the second goal with a quarter of an hour left in the game.
The last quarter saw little goalmouth action with ‘The Ghosts’ happy to run down the clock and secure an important three points.
