IPSWICH WANDERERS 1 HAVERHILL ROVERS 2

Barbara Jones19 Nov 2017 - 20:23

Haverhill progressed comfortably into the next round of the Premier Cup, although an equaliser in the early stages of the second half, and some early Ipswich efforts, almost derailed their plans.

OMNI FREIGHT PREMIER CUP SECOND ROUND

Some early saves from away goalkeeper Charlie Turner kept his side in this tie, the first two being a double save to block Sam Cheetham’s volley and then to come out to feet of Peter Maina and put his rebound behind for a corner after 8 minutes; he was then needed with another block three minutes later and once more on 17 minutes when Kyle Ferguson took advantage of a slip by Rhys Shulver, Turner denying Ferguson as well.

With 18 minutes gone Haverhill edged ahead, what looked like a loose touch by Marc Abbott being recovered by the away midfielder to poke it out towards Ben Tait on the right wing, who put over a pinpoint cross to allow an unmarked Mitchell Burr at the back post to volley the ball past ‘keeper Daniel Joyce at the same upright.

Joyce came to his side’s aid several times more, denying Sam Holmes (with a long range moving shot), Burr twice more and Luke Haines from a free kick before the break.

Two minutes after half time it was 1-1, a scrappy goal by Maina levelling the tie, but Burr netted again five minutes later to regain his side’s lead, a series of first time flicks ending with Burr getting a small piece of fortune 15 yards out to retain the ball before taking his time and passing the ball right footed into the bottom left corner.

Joyce was again in action to save a shot from Tait and a follow up by Burr, substitute Harry Halls also finding himself denied by the same shot stopper near the end.

ROVRS : Turner, Shulver, Fox, Milne, Watson (Camfield, 58), Holmes, Abbott, Tait (Halls, 85), Jebb, Haines, Burr (Clarke, 85). Subs not used – Palmer, Geoghegan.
