Waddell Cup 2nd Round

Hawick Waverley progressed to the last eight in the Waddell Cup with a comprehensive victory over Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs. The cup holders netted 5 times in the opening 20 minutes and ended up scoring no less than eleven times to put the Border Amateur 'C' Division side to the sword.

Waverleys' first real chance fell to centre half Davis Hope, who raced through on goal and managed to get a shot away which was blocked by keeper Douglas Gill. Fairydeans' Marc McFadyen showed his sides first piece of attacking play, bursting down the right and firing over a dangerous cross that Waverley keeper Ali Willison gathered at the second attempt.

The opening goal arrived in the 9th minute and it was Waverleys' Dean McColm who netted. Willisons' clearance was flicked on by Jordan Yardley and McColm ran beyond the home defence to drill the ball high into the net. McColm had another chance moments later which was blocked by Gill but it was soon 2-0 when Yardley went through on goal from a Paul Hossack pass and he slipped the ball past the advancing keeper.

Fairydeans' Mark McCall set up Declan Bell on the 18 yard line and Willison had to make a smart save from his shot but it was Waverley who netted again in the 15th minute, Simon Philbin picking out Yardley in space and he squared the ball to McColm who side footed home. Two minutes later, Waverley did it again. Ryan Clapperton intercepted the ball on the half way line and went on a run into the area and he picked out Yardley who got in front of his marker to find the corner of the net.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Waverley got their 5th goal and McColm completed his hat trick. Craig McCutcheons' pinpoint pass picked out Philbin who unselfishly picked out McColm and he did the rest with an accomplished finish. Fairydean got a goal back in the 24th minute, Sean Reid curling over a corner, Martin Gibson challenging Davis Hope n the air and the ball came off the Waverley captain and dropped into the net.

Just past the half hour mark, McCutcheons pass found Yardley in the area and he in turn picked out Taylor Hope who drilled the ball into the net. Fairydeans' Tom Alderson had a fine run down the right and Willison had to be alert to push his near post shot behind before Yardley matched McColms feat by completing his hat trick in the 38th minute, heading home after a goalmouth scramble from a corner kick.

Taylor Hope almost added another before the break when his shot from the edge of the area looked to be going into the corner but Gill made a fantastic save to touch the ball onto the upright.

Fairydean had a couple of early oppotunities in the second half, Gibson getting on the end of a Keiran Martin free kick but his first time shot across goal went just wide of the far post. Moments later, Martin latched onto a Waverley clearance and hit a brilliant dipping volley that crashed off the crossbar.

Waverley were soon back on the attack, McColm setting up Clapperton with Gill touching the ball wide despite struggling with an injury. Yardley notched his fourth and Waverleys' eighth in the 52nd minute, getting in front of Gill to finish off a Philbin cross. Fairydean still got forward at every opportunity and Reid made headway down the right before pulling the ball back for Bell who sidefooted wide.

Waverley manager Mick Hope made several substitutions, one of them being Tony Craggs who was making his 200th appearance for the club. Referee Damian Main awarded Waverley an indirect free kick in the Fairydean penalty box after he deemed Gill to have picked up a pass back. Philbin rolled the ball to substitute Jamie Richardson who crashed a shot off the underside of the bar.

Hossack again set up Clapperton but Gill got his foot to the shot before Philbin went on a mazy run, dribbling past three opponents in a packed area before slipping the ball inside the far post. However, referee Main wrongly chalked the goal off as he said the ball hadn't went into the net and incredibly awarded a goal kick.

That was Philbins last action as he had to leave the field shortly afterwards having injured his ankle and with Waverley having used all their substitutes, they had to play the remaining 15 minutes with 10 men. This did not alter the flow of the game with Waverley extending their lead in the 80th minute, substitute Greg Ford running clear from half way and made no mistake with a well struck shot.

Three minutes later, Waverley hit double figures when Declan Leckie floated over a cross to the back post where Richardson met it with a downward header to score for the second consecutive match. In the dying seconds of the game, Waverley rounded off the scoring, Ford combining with Clapperton and despite Gill getting something on Clappertons' shot, the ball looped over into the net.
