On a cloudy evening at Mersey, the Under 15s played Elworth CC in the Quarter-Final of the 20-over Cup. Well done to Elworth for fighting their way from South Cheshire to arrive for the 6:00 Pm start. Elworth won the toss and put us in to bat first.
As regular captain, wicket-keeper and opening batsman Tom Russell was unable to play, Ben Haspell (Captain) walked out to bat with Humzah Wasim. After playing the first couple of overs watchfully, they began to up the pace with Ben hitting their first change bowler for 2 fours and a six over the tennis courts. When Ben was out for 31 in the 11th over, we were 60-1. Humzah Wasim was joined by Alishan Khan and both looked good and had put on a 24 run partnership before Humzah was dismissed for 33 in the 15th over, Mersey at 84-2. This brought in Patrick Chatterton who proceded to smash the ball all over the ground before being dismissed in the 19th over for 31 off 13 balls. His innings consisted of just one dot ball as well as 4 fours and 1 six. The incoming Joe Keyworth was caught off a top-edge on his first ball. After a good last over, Mersey finished on a very good 139-4 with the understated Alishan Khan finishing not out on 30.
Taylor Entwistle started off as Wicket Keeper for Elworth’s innings before being replaced by Ben. Both did very well and only conceded 2 byes and Ben claimed a stumping. Elworth were never really in the game in their innings and finished 101-7, even though Stubbs smashed a length ball from Humzah for a six over the balcony, some good tidy bowling stopped Elworth from mounting any sort of serious challenge.
The Bowling figures: Ben H 4-0-26-2, Harry V 4-0-19-0, Humzah W 2-0-21-0, Joe G 4-1-11-2, Mark L 3-1-16-1, Taylor E 2-0-3-1, Alex H 1-0-4-0.
Man of the Match: Hard to choose between all 4 run scorers and Joe Glare but it has to go to Patrick Chatterton. His explosive innings took it away from Elworth.
Moment to forget: Between Joe Keyworth’s golden duck and Alishan Khan dropping a dolly off my bowling!!!!
