Curtain comes down on another great season

All good things must come to an end and so this Sunday saw our final match of the 2017/18 season.

The highlight of this season has undoubtedly been our Cup campaign where every member of the squad has played a part in a journey that started slowly and exploded into life either side of Christmas. Our reward was a trip to the top table for a game against a strong Sefton side.

The first half started slowly as mistakes stopped us from getting out of our own half. Sefton took advantage with a brace of tries. Our first foray into Sefton territory resulted in a good score from Antoon. The forwards sucked in tacklers before a pass wide exploited the space. Our equaliser came shortly after when a good take and recycle from the re-start by James led to some strong carries by Danny and Charlie before the ball found Caelan in a postage stamp of space on half-way (which as it happens was all he needed). The next period saw Sefton repelling some sustained pressure before a quickly taken tap by Joachim fed Josh to get his reward for a strong carrying display.

Sefton showed their quality with a well-worked equaliser and finished the half on the front foot with only a last ditch tackle by Cameron saving another try down the wing by one of Sefton's many flyers.

At half-time, Sefton showed their class by pointing out that both clubs had about 9 subs and it would make a great end to the season if we could increase the numbers on the pitch to next season's 15-a-side. With that, the Cup game was called as a creditable draw and the kids got a taste of flankers and full scrums with pick-ups by the No. 8. It turns out that Sefton are well equipped for next season as their scrum looked dominant, their pack hunted down turnovers and their flyers continued to find space.

In a way it was a perfect way to end our season in that we proved that we could mix it with the best in the county but that there is lots to work on.

With that our season is over! I want to take this opportunity to thank all the boys for their efforts and contribution. As always it has been a pleasure to share the journey with you. Thank you to the coaches, manager and helpers for all your hard work and dedication. Thanks also to the parents for their support. We look forward to our end-of-season treats and a preseason re-union with our old friend 'Malcolm'!
