Convincing start to home campaign

Stuart Paston

Lions ease to victory on return of top flight football to Hellesdon

The first home game of a new campaign saw Hellesdon play host to Caister United. Enforced changes saw Owen Spooner, making his 100th appearance, and Connor Simpson come into the line up that faced Reepham in place of Jack Guyton and Jack Hurrell.
On a perfect playing surface early play was frantic with Hellesdon, kicking into a strong wind, struggling with their passing. The first shot at goal came on 5 minutes when Owen Spooner forced Huggins in the visitors goal into a good save to his right to push away the midfielder's well struck effort. Anton Ward then fired over the bar for Caister after a break down the left.
On 20 minutes Connor Simpson went close to breaking the deadlock with a low shot that fizzed past the far post but a minute later the Lions went ahead when link up play between Kegan and Connor Charlesworth inside the box led to Kegan slotting the ball past Huggins, the goal stemming from good pressure forcing a Caister mistake. Tom Blake was denied an opportunity to break clear by a good tackle whilst on 40 minutes full back Bailey surged forward at the other end before lifting his shot over the bar.
With half time nearing tenacious play by Blake in winning the ball back on the edge of the area led to his shot striking a defender and somehow staying out of the net after hitting the woodwork.

Half time: Hellesdon 1 Caister United 0

The Lions made a tremendous start to the second half when a minute in, Simpson's low cross from the left found C.Charlesworth wide on the right and his angled shot took a deflection en route to the far corner. Hellesdon began to take control and Huggins made a fine save from Blake. K.Charlesworth then put a good chance over the bar and brother Connor saw a free kick flash past the post.
Glen Spooner was brought on for Simpson as the Lions looked to add to their lead in a game they were now dominating and on 72 minutes skipper Mac Gee released Blake who ran at the Caister defence before finishing in style to open his account for the season. Eight minutes later K.Charlesworth made it 4-0 giving Huggins no chance as he buried a left foot shot into the far corner.
A double substitution gave Ben Hughes, returning from suspension, and Lewis Wardale their first taste of Premier Division action as the Lions continued to maintain their work rate and focus until the final whistle.
On the evidence so far the team is well prepared mentally and physically to compete strongly at a higher level and it was another very encouraging performance with everyone playing their part in a convincing win.
