Martin joined on a free transfer from Oldland Abbotonians in 2017 when the Grove had just been promoted to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. During that time, Martin’s role also included all three of the club’s teams, the social media output, the programme and some commercial work too.
On relinquishing the position, Martin said “The secretary’s role is an incredibly demanding role and one that needs the person concerned to be giving 100% at all times. Since returning to full time work at the County FA last year, this commitment has proved too difficult to meet and it is with sadness that I step down from my role.”
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Norton Lane, especially the first two seasons where there was a fantastic group of players who welcomed an outsider like myself into the club. Lads like Scott Lewis, Ben & Luke Crewe, Asa & Craig White, James & Lewis Dunn, Mark Fear, Carl Bush, Mickey Parsons, Rhys Hickery, Joe Brimble, Jack Fillingham, Giorgio Mancini..... the list goes on. Each and every one made me feel a special part of the club. We finished 9th in the Premier Division ahead of some big sides....what a team that was! I’d like to thank them all for making my job so pleasurable.”
“I’d also like to thank the chairman, Mike Greatbanks, who has given me every tool I need to do the job and been there for me at every turn; both my first team “gaffers” John Durbin and Jamie Hillman for their fantastic support plus every member of the committee and of course, the reserve team managers across the years. I’m super grateful for your backing.”
“I will not be settling into my armchair any time soon though with my part time OPTA role continuing plus plans are afoot for another book and I still plan to visit the odd Western League game too whilst sorting out my fitness!!”
A successor has been appointed to Martin’s role and news of this will be released in due course.
Please continue to send all club correspondence to secretary@hengroveathletic.com and this will be forwarded on to the correct person.
