Coaching Team Comments
The coaches would like to offer a warm welcome to Millom. Millom are coming into this game on the back of a good win at Oldham St Annes and we are well aware of the threat they offer after our last game in Millom last season. This season is already showing us what last season did, that consistency and discipline is key to everything you do, its not the fanciest even most skilful teams who win the games its teh disciplined teams you are willing just to grind games out, unfortunately we fell would of this last week and after taking a 6-16 lead we let slip and went down 24-22, hopefully we can right them wrongs this week and pick up our 1st win of the season. From all the coaches we hope you enjoy your trip to Cumbria.
Chairmans Comments
Today we offer a warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of Millom Rugby League club (the oldest- Amateur Rugby League club in the world being formed in 1873) for this eagerly awaited “Cumbrian Derby” game in the NCL Division 3. We hope you all had a pleasant journey up to Whitehaven this afternoon. It was nice to see their coach and some of his players up here in Whitehaven the other week for our last home game against Batley Boys, on a spying mission maybe? Hope they didn’t see too much though.
The Millom club has had some notable achievements. In 1889 it fielded 12 of the 13 players in a Cumberland v. Yorkshire match at Hunslet, whilst over 50 of its players have been awarded full international honours whilst playing for Millom since 1945. The club's biggest honour came in the 1985-86 season, when they played against Mysons in the British Amateur Rugby League Association National Cup Final. Later that year, they gave Wakefield Trinity a scare, losing only 8-14 in the John Player Trophy. They were National Conference League division one champions in 1994-1995, and won its challenge cup in 1990-1991. The last time these two sides met was on Saturday 17th August 2019 when our visitors this afternoon ran out 32-18 victors down at Millom, so I know Sean and his team will be out to try and make amends for that defeat. But hey, who know’s whats going to happen this afternoon, remember that thrilling 24-24 draw way back in May of last year. Millom were dead and buried but rallied back and could of easily won the game in the end, but a last minute conversion was sadly missed by them and I think it gave both sides just reward for a hard fought “Derby” point. To our visitors I hope you all enjoy your time with us here in West Cumbria and if any of you need anything please feel free to ask any member of our committee or bar staff and we will only be to happy to help you out, please enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. I would like to take this opportunity to thank St.Benedicts Rugby Union Club for letting us use their facilities albeit at short notice to enable our last home match with Batley Boys to go ahead.
We hope you all enjoy the entertainment after the game from the fantastic “Beatle Boy”
I would also like to remind all player’s, officials and supporters of both clubs to respect the match officials at all times, respect each other and play the game in a fair, true and competitive spirit and may the best team win. Enjoy the game.
